On the National Day of Remembrance of the Québec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia, we honour the lives of the victims of the horrific January 29, 2017 attack at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Québec: Ibrahima Barry, Mamadou Tanou Barry, Khaled Belkacemi, Abdelkrim Hassane, Azzeddine Soufiane, and Aboubaker Thabti. They were fathers, sons, brothers and husbands—men whose lives mattered deeply to their families, to their communities and to our country. Their legacy strengthens our resolve to confront injustice, racism and Islamophobia, and to stand in solidarity with Muslim communities across Canada. At a time of profound global challenges, this National Day of Remembrance takes on renewed urgency and meaning. As we honour the victims, we also stand with all people affected by Islamophobia and all those who continue to face discrimination and violence in their daily lives. Our government remains steadfast in its commitment to combatting hate and intolerance, and to ensuring that Canadian Muslims feel safe and protected in their neighbourhoods and their places of worship. Through the work of Canada’s Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia and Canada’s Action Plan on Combatting Hate, we are providing at-risk communities with access to financial support to protect their gathering spaces and funding local initiatives that bring Canadians together and combat racism. We encourage all people, organizations and communities to use the Canadian Guide to Understanding and Combatting Islamophobia: For a more inclusive Canada. We also invite all Canadians to take concrete action to prevent and address hate and discrimination in their communities, including by marking the ninth anniversary of the tragic Québec City mosque attack through acts of solidarity, such as wearing a green fabric square which can easily be made at home as shown in our Green Square campaign video. Islamophobia and all forms of racism have no place in Canada. As we mark this day together, let us remind ourselves of what unites us as Canadians. Our commitment to respect, justice and inclusion will always be stronger than what seeks to divide us. - Joint statement with the Hon. @MarcMillerVM, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages #RememberJan29 canada.ca/en/canadian-he…

I have been hearing from Canadian Sudanese communities who have been living a constant nightmare as they watch loved ones in Sudan continue to experience a brutal, ceaseless war and suffer massacres, famine, and displacement. Many are urging Canada to do all it can to help save lives.
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency@Refugees

🚨 UNHCR is deeply concerned as escalating, brutal violence in El Fasher (North Darfur) forces thousands to flee, while many remain trapped with few options. Families are caught in the city after months of siege and continuous fighting.

Canadian Palestinians have endured nearly 24 months of watching the incessant bombing, the forced starvation, and the targeting of their innocent loved ones. They are asking for concrete steps & consequences to stop the horrifying violations of international humanitarian law.
Anita Anand@AnitaAnandMP

Canada is horrified by the Israeli military’s bombing of the Nasser hospital in Gaza. The government of Israel has a duty to protect civilians, healthcare workers and journalists. The violence must stop and civilian lives must be protected.

Imagine a young 19-year-old woman heading home from work on the bus and being deliberately targeted with anti-Muslim slurs, threatened with murder and slapped violently in the face. This happened in Ottawa on OC Transpo on Monday. Almost no one on the bus intervened and he got away. One witness later insisted the bus driver stop, call police and ensure statements were taken. The perpetrator must be held accountable. We need to collectively stand against Islamophobia - and the dangerous narratives that put visibly Muslim Canadian women at particular high risk: a pattern we have seen in Ottawa and elsewhere. The victim, a part-time public servant and student, is extremely traumatized, afraid to take the bus again.
Mark Sutcliffe@_MarkSutcliffe

I was distraught to learn of the reprehensible and unprovoked assault, including Islamophobic slurs and threats, on a young Muslim woman on an OC Transpo bus yesterday. I strongly condemn this act of violence and hatred; it has no place in our community. Everyone should feel safe while travelling on public transit or anywhere else in Ottawa. I spoke today to the victim's family and to leaders in the Muslim community to offer my support and sympathy on behalf of the people of Ottawa. We must all stand together against Islamophobia and hatred in all its forms and continue to do everything possible to make our city safe for everyone.

Today marks four years since the terrorist attack that claimed the lives of four members of the Afzaal family in London, Ontario – an act of Islamophobic hatred that shook Canadians from coast to coast to coast. It was not only an attack on one family, or community, but on our shared values as Canadians. It is important to remember Salman, Madiha, Yumnah, and Talat, and to honour #OurLondonFamily by continuing the vital work of combatting Islamophobia and all forms of hate for a more inclusive Canada. We continue to hear about concerning incidents of Islamophobia, and anti-Palestinian and anti-Arab hate. One of the most recent attacks was on a Muslim woman at the Ajax Public Library where the assailant forcibly removed her hijab and attempted to set it on fire.  As Canada's Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia, I remain steadfast in my commitment to supporting the federal government's efforts towards promoting inclusion, advancing safety and well-being, and protecting freedom of religion and civil liberties for all. I have been hearing from families, community members and leaders, from a range of backgrounds and experiences who are dedicated to nurturing safer communities. They have been calling for more action to ensure that Canada is a place where everyone can be proud of who they are and free to worship as they wish. Their experiences and insights are key towards building community-informed solutions, including creating resources that can be utilized in workplaces, schools, and within community spaces. This year, we launched a landmark resource to support these efforts: the Canadian Guide on Understanding and Combatting Islamophobia: For a more inclusive Canada, the first government-produced document of its kind.  In memory of “Our London Family", and all those who were deliberately killed in Islamophobic attacks in our country, let us recommit to advancing awareness, understanding, and hope.

Canadians of all backgrounds, and specifically Canadian Palestinians with loved ones in Gaza and the West Bank, have persistently called for the upholding of international humanitarian law. Too many innocent lives have been lost, or forever changed; so many more are at risk.

Today, the leaders of Canada, the United Kingdom, and France issued a joint statement strongly opposing the expansion of Israel’s military operations in Gaza and any attempts to expand settlements in the West Bank. Read the full statement: ow.ly/nhp250VVh5h
