@SharpyUltimate @Mimik_Saturn Lowkey I feel like a big part of the reason we kept them around was bc custom moves were announced as legal for EVO. After that event though we saw how silly a lot of them were and dropped them.

@Mimik_Saturn I'm so glad we never implemented the custom specials in our competitive scene, it took 0 brains to figure out how dumb and broken they would be in tournaments. I'm glad US didn't take outstandingly long to ban them and play normal.

@sweetenernj Gotcha. It's like yuzu all over again where the settings need to be optimized on both sides for best performance. Which is a shame bc that adds yet another barrier to overcome (we should be used to this by now, I suppose).

@_DKwill Even a simple Rob laser lags without an overclock or Ness spamming pk fire vs ICs. Or (one things for sure) ppl running no OC, 1.0, AND COSMETIC MODS is suicide (and I wouldn't be surprised if that's 95% of players t b h). U can test 1.0.3 w/those guys but imo 1.0 is the way.

Learned the hard way that the v1.0 mod with an OCed Switch still doesn't play nice with Ice Climbers. That and general stuttering has made me consider just running 1.0.3 after all rather than v1.0. I think my Switch is too old and temps get too hot for it to be stable tbh.

@sweetenernj Yep and I can't rely on other people running an OCed Switch is the thing. So perhaps for now it's better to settle for the common denominator if I want the most varied practice.

@_DKwill Ngl depending on the characters and effects; it could happen. I know a bunch of characters and some scenarios can drop FPS. I really doubt a lot of ppl run overclocks either. You can try reverting to 1.0.3 and running it back w/them. But I RLY think its their lack of OC more tbh

I had it maxed but didn't do much testing tbh. Was fighting phirb last night (who was on v1.0.3) and we had a ton of issues. Could just be IC's being problematic. But had issues with 2-3 other players with stutters last night as well so I'm guessing it was related to the OC not performing as expected. Could just be that I had to tinker with it more and fine tune it perhaps.

@_DKwill What overclock settings did you use? Regardless any OC doesn’t matter if your opponent doesn’t have one. Because if they drop FPS, you will too. That’s how all netcodes work. I put money if you fight an ICs CPU offline or do their confirms in training mode; I bet it will b fine

Like I often wonder about the value of latency reduction, having worked years on gecko codes and hardware and netcode and emulator latency improvements, and what I've observed is that depending on how invested someone is in competition, 1ms of latency seems to be worth between $2 and $10 to people So here's a table for $5, though this may take away some of the whimsy (quantifying only what I think the latency improvement is worth in isolation, ofc there are other factors like motion fluidity, visual quality, input consistency, other features etc; latency improvement obviously not expected to explain full costs of a thing) Switching from 60Hz monitor to 120Hz [for PC games]: 6.7ms ($33) Switching from 60Hz TV to 60Hz OLED TV [works on Switch]: 4.2ms ($21) Switching from 120Hz monitor to 240Hz: 3.3ms ($17) Switching from 240Hz monitor to 240Hz OLED: ~1ms ($5) OCing your official adapter for PC [free, 5 mins. do it]: 3.5ms ($17) OCing your mayflash adapter for PC: ~14ms ($70) Official to lossless on Switch: ~3.5ms ($17) Mayflash to lossless on Switch: ~17ms ($85) Switching from a 1000Hz keyboard to a 8000Hz one: ~0.4ms ($2) Blujay's mod: ...52ms: $260. Cost: $80 to get someone to modchip your OLED switch I think? Possibly less to sell current switch and get moddable one. Also less if you can solder yourself. And zero if you have moddable switch to begin with. So when something that has an improvement/$ this much higher than anything else shows up. You say thank you. You don't complain about the cost. It doesn't matter if you're not invested in competition and your personal threshold for diminishing returns on latency/$ is very low. The ms/$ is SO GOOD that even if you're a complete casual you would probably find it worth to get a modded switch. I barely play SSBU and when I tested their mod I booted world of light because the game finally felt good. This should also explain my astonishment at how little of a fuck Nintendo has historically given about latency since brawl. Latency isn't only for competitive players, when you press a button and it doesn't take ages to do stuff on screen the game just feels better... Not everyone frustrated at input lag for silksong on switch were competitive players

Couldn't have said it better, esp the part about p2w Getting someone to mod your switch costs the same as switching off joycons. You play on joycons? No? Then shut the fuck up about alleged financial inaccessibility. The lag reduction per $ is so much higher than anything around that yes we're taking this any day of the week

How dare you put fix in quotes. smash's online has barely functioned for 20 years. anyone who's even remotely passionate about the game is jumping for joy at good online. if you wanna point fingers, blame nintendo for making such a bad service that we have to fix it ourselves

@Wormynugget Which version are you using, is it the original version or the new 1.0.3? Also make sure you're not running any cosmetics as that can cause noticeable stutter (at least that was the case for the original).
