the fact that there is no mass Western response to the policy is making me feel insane. this policy is the most explicit act of institutionalized genocide since Cambodia, if not the Holocaust itself.

Capitalism really did a number on us because “have to” isn’t remotely true. The only real necessity here might be running shoes. The rest is just for aesthetics
PMZee@Nagey8

You’d think running is a cheap sport since it’s just running. But you quickly realize that’s far from the truth when you have to buy shoes, socks, a Garmin watch, subscribe to Strava, sign up for marathons, and get all the other running gear😭

I’m that extremely fun person who, during icebreakers finds a way to educate people on the fact that Chiquita Bananas used to be United Fruit company that colonized Cuba since 1898. Fidel Castro and the revolution kicked them out, seized $1 billion of their assets in 1960, put a cap on private land ownership at 165 acres, and nationalized oil, telephone company, banks and sugar mills. And the US hasn’t stopped punishing Cuba for breaking their chains of slavery & colonization ever since.

Capitalism’s structural flaw is that once capital reaches a certain scale, it can purchase politics, government, regulations, competitors, and media, creating a self-reinforcing cycle that compounds wealth for the ones on the top. The system that claims to reward merit increasingly rewards incumbency. That’s not a bug that can be patched with regulations, because we see that our entire political system is a cesspool of lobbyists advancing corporate interests by paying the politicians to take positions favorable for them. Furthermore, capitalism’s end result is- the deployment of the nation’s military on its behest. Which is where we are at now. So it’s not about selling $10 tshirts, it’s if you acquire so much wealth, that you ban others from making that shirt, and you can pay the child laborer in Indonesia even less, and if they revolt, you send your military. That has been the logical endpoint of allowing unlimited capital accumulation to operate inside democratic institutions that are, by design, purchasable. Whether it is Chiquita bananas (also known as united fruit company), Dole pineapples, production of rubber by exploitation of Congolese- for ABIR (Anglo-Belgian India Rubber Company, JP MORGAN CHASE- owning 15k slaves as collateral, Tiffany & co- by exploiting slaves picking cotton- it’s all of it.

People who think exploiting sweatshop workers is fine because it’s overseas and it’s a lifestyle they’re accustomed to.

Also what people refer to as participating in capitalism is actually commerce which is not the same thing. Most of us are merely exchanging money for goods or services which is commerce. We are not exploiting the labor of others for profit

Black people participating in capitalism because we have to is very different than being Black and *defending* capitalism in hopes that you will one day be a billionaire and be cool with Jeff Bezos. Two veryyyyy different things.

Big difference between being a capitalist and being a prisoner of a capitalist system. Having a well-paying job doesn’t make you a capitalist. Having to work to survive and get your basic needs, regardless of your ability to do so, is being a prisoner of a capitalist system.

New York, we’ve got your back: we’re upgrading 6,700+ catch basins, storm drains, and slotted manhole covers so that when it rains, no one can catch you slipping.  This is a $108M investment in more reliable infrastructure, flood prevention, dry streets, and dry socks for New Yorkers.

You can’t be intelligent w/o consistently asking why or how. And that is absent a lot nowadays. Living off of generalizations and your idea of people bc you think you did all the knowledge you need to do isn’t really the play you think it is.
