The many colors of Holi have been scattered across the cinema screen hundreds of times. Through the years, films have used the festival to bring out many shades of human emotion. Noise, celebration, mischief, playfulness, romance, longing, thrill, laughter, satire, rebellion, affection, revenge, teasing, protest, and many more feelings have found their way onto the screen through scenes of Holi. Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Amitabh Bachchan, Chhaya Devi, and composer Jaidev once created such a beautiful Holi moment in cinema showered with grace and dignity.. In the Holi portion of the Raagmaala in Alasp, @SrBachchan in the neighborhood with his group to play Holi. He is looking for Sarju Bai. Sarju Bai, the old lady with the innocence of a child, tries to run away and hide from the group for the fear of being colored. Yet she is finally caught by Amitabh and his toli. Afraid of the shower of colors, she closes her eyes. Amitabh then gently and respectfully places the color at her feet. The love and tenderness that shine in Chhaya Devi’s eyes reflect the living spirit of cinema and its quiet bond with the viewer’s heart. Raise your hands if you remember what a sensation this album was during the 50th Anniversary of Indian Independence, some 29 years ago. Vande Mataram! @arrahman’s debut non-film album, solo as a singer! What a banger of an album! The music! The controversy over Vande Mataram. Rahman’s disclaimer on the leaflet. Bharat Bala’s phenomenally epic music video. Still etched in my mind, along with the memory of buying it for ₹60 (one of the most expensive albums back in the day)… at a time when a complete set of Raj Comics used to cost us ₹56.

This was indeed a very heart wrenching epi, which still sends shivers down my spine. One of the best!
