@AiBodice eat or be eaten, much like how survival means in real life, either metaphorically or literally
English

I've played RE games *a lot* throughout my life and one of the strangest misconceptions about 'survival horror' is that "ammo should be scarce"
what part of old survival horror games ever signaled that? it wasn't silent hill
it wasn't resident evil
where did it come from?
Matthew@NEEMOAHTOAD
Idk if I have enough guns and ammo guys
English

@sskiinn1 but it was correct and you have a skill issue
English

@DrLight66 @FromSoftCentral I killed every enemy I came across, and not particularly gracefully as indicated by being in caution

English

@FromSoftCentral @alaskorly Topic creator is almost certainly trolling about RE2 and pretending that RE1 doesn't exist
English

@breedableboy45 @DoomMarine666 I'm overwhelmingly just ok at video games which is why I find myself so shocked that so many people seem to believe in ammo scarcity being a thing in older RE games
English

@Pentacoro I've killed every single enemy I've come across in older RE games, the only enemies I didn't kill were enemies that I had to go out of my way to encounter like the spiders that spawn in the dog hallway(iirc, it's been ages since I went down there)
English

@alaskorly Nowdays, playing them again with proper genre expectations and knowledge, we know to avoid enemies that don't block our path, we know to diligently scan rooms for resources. Back then, however, people weren't used to being given a gun in a videogame and not just shoot at stuff.
English

@finalcake @Aellae1 there actually was JP lines recorded but afaik they were either scrapped or recorded after and the only place I've heard them on was an RE1 orchestra album
English

@Aellae1 The problem is that a lot of the English script made little sense to me until I realized "...this feels like Japanese but directly translated" so I looked up a Biohazard 1 playthrough to check the untranslated script. My hunch was right, especially Wesker's lines at the start.
English

@Thebeardkingart aside from the post I qrted, all images were taken from my playthroughs in which I killed *everything* I came across
English

@alaskorly Secondly most of the shots you showed are from people who know when to conserve and run that does not apply to most new players, they don't know maps or optimal ammo usage, a person who never touched classic re will most likely end up needing every bit of ammo they find.
English

@Thebeardkingart I've only ever beaten classic horror games with blind playthroughs
I *never* had ammo issues, only healing item issues
hell, I beat cvx for the second time in my life, first time in a decade, don't remember a damn thing about the second half
this is my inventory

English

@alaskorly kind of a misconception. In classic re the games give you weapons and ammo appropriate as the story and enemies ramp up ultimately full action by the end of the game, also most new players are often low on supplies in the classics because blind playthroughs aren't optimized.
English

@rinsass before the mid-2010s, the only classic, pre-4 RE I beat was 3 with cheats
when I finally got around to actually beating the RE games I never beat as a kid, ammo was NEVER a problem, only health items
same with silent hill, once you found the hammer ammo just floods your inventory
English

Classic RE games are balanced around people who aren't very good at survival horror and are playing the game for the first time. People do actually softlock on the older games all the time. For those people ammo IS scarce.

English

@LeCheuf1959 even on my first runs, which were well into the 2010s for a lot of games because of my genuinely crippling ADHD as a kid, I never had this problem
health items? yes, I've ran low on them many times and had playthroughs killed as a result
but ammo? never
English

@alaskorly On my first playthrough of OG RE2, I had to knife only Birkin's third form.
this is "knowing the game by heart" bias
English

@mattgman03 @DoomMarine666 c'mon man tank controls were easy as pie to understand, pus the games gave you autoaim AND a button to switch targets
English

@alaskorly @DoomMarine666 Listen, when we were young and the game was scaring the shit out of us while we tried to control that tank of a setup. It was easy to waste ammo and screw up.
English

@joyceybannachek @DoomMarine666 the game gives you more than enough to do so
hell, I sometimes use the magnum on a regular enemy every now and then, as a treat
the only problems I've ever run into were health items with my gameplay style, which I got around by shrimply not doing poorly
English

@alaskorly @DoomMarine666 You’re playing bad ones like code veronica and Dino crisis
English

@notmolarri @DoomMarine666 hunters themselves are pretty easy too, just 2-3 shotgun shells or 1-2 acid rounds and they're doneso
English

@alaskorly @DoomMarine666 My roommate is playing re1 and hes killed every zombie in the mansion with shit loads left to spare
The only thing hes been avoiding is the hunters for good reason
English

@breedableboy45 @DoomMarine666 RE1(on both characters, in arrange mode, and in rebirth mode), RE2, RE3, SH1-3, chaos break, countdown vampires, overblood
English

@alaskorly @DoomMarine666 im curious to know which games do you reference here
English

@Apuru_kun I dunno, I always felt like the game was pretty generous with ammo at every point so long as you examined your surroundings a lot
hell, there's like 5 handgun ammo pickups on the way to the RPD if you're not gunning for the alt costume
English

@alaskorly Ammo is scarce in older Resident Evil games; i played RE2 again recently, and for the most part, you're pretty limited on resources.
But inevitably, like all games, the limited resources become plentiful, which is why the games pivot to action by the final hour or two.
English

@marfanman2525 yet I killed every enemy I came across and still had a surplus of ammo
English

@alaskorly Ammo is also more scarce when you are killing every enemy. Just saying.
English

@DylanDubz_ or maybe survival horror has always been like this considering RE literally invented the genre's name
English

Or maybe, RE wasn’t as much of survival horror as we think it was back then, and has always leaned into more action than its contemporaries. 🕵🏻♂️
