For the next one and a half hours, I went to every single police officer there to request that if you get the two buses removed, people who are stuck, we can make a U-turn and join the main road. I received no reaction, no response. I did not throw that bottle towards any protester or rally, but on the ground to attract the attention of the police... Mr Mahajan was actually the only person in that rally who at least tried to listen to what I was saying. Why does the Congress and/or Left want TMC to lose? 1) Because they, especially CPIM, have faced the brunt of TMC's violence since 2011. So, TMC is enemy #1. 2) They believe that TMC = Mamata Banerjee. So, if it loses, that would be the end of the party and the entire 27% Muslim vote would automatically shift to INC/LF. 3) INC needs to revive in West Bengal to have any chance at the centre. Mamata Banerjee will never back Rahul Gandhi as PM, since she would want that post herself. 4) Opposition parties believe that the Modi govt will face a bigger anti-incumbency in 2029, and it will help them in West Bengal, not just in the next Lok Sabha election, but also in the 2031 assembly elections. Whether any of these are rational calculations is moot.
