and i'm sorry, if the appeal of ur world is how it's a proper asian fantasy, taking away the mandarin is so weird & tiptoes into orientalism instead of representation. "the west's view of the east" becomes very real once you water down the fundamental asian influences

@CasualLoreVault @GwensHollow Unfortunately it’s all the new script for English which just has letters reminiscent of some Chinese radicals. The character that looks like fire is just /z/ and that banner says “fee(d?)ing supplies” I haven’t seen a single Chinese character in any still

@GwensHollow Well, there’s no single discernible Chinese characters because (I’m fairly certain) Chinese words are written in combined characters to create full words or phrases. But there’s definitely script here that are *extremely* similar to Chinese characters.

First of all, they didn’t retcon anything. You can see that the Chinese script is still the common script during multiple scenes of the end credits. The new language looks an awful lot like Tibetan script. You know… the people the air nomads are based on? And it makes its debut with the scene showing Avatar Sonams stone figure, meaning it is an ANCIENT air nomad language. It’s very likely that the GAang, their trusted assistants and students, and institutions like the White Lotus use an ancient Air Nomad language to communicate in writing. It would be far more secure than communicating in the common script.

Tbh I’m bummed that the in-universe language is now just canonically English. If they really wanted an original script a custom logography would have better respected the Chinese influences of the world, but I get how that would’ve needed far too much effort
