Kargil war veteran Havildar, Md Daud Ali (Murshidabad, WB). Served India for 21 yrs. Sustained a lasting ear injury in mortar blast. And today his name is deleted from the WB Voter list. A suspect in the eyes of the ECI and so too Gyanesh Kumar. Daud Ali asks : “I served this nation for 21 years, one month and one day. Yet today, my nationality – and my family’s – is being questioned." My mother’s name is in the voter list of 2002. I was called for a hearing in Baharampur. I submitted all the documents. But then because my name was removed, both of my daughter’s and a son’s names were struck off as well. I don’t know what else I can do or whom shall I approach. After dedicating a long part of my life to serving the Indian army, this is the situation I find myself in today. And If this is happening to someone like me, I can only imagine what ordinary civilians might be going through." Who will answer Daud Ali’s questions? Who will give him justice? Which institution should he approach? His voting rights have been eroded, who is accountable? And lastly, whose vote is safe in West Bengal? Too many questions, no answers.

I am hearing cases of many Muslim voters in West Bengal who have got deleted in SIR despite submitting passports and now ECI forcing them to do election duty. So they allow them to be called Bangladeshi and Rohingyas but force them to conduct Indian elections!

We need more such officers with spine. The Chief Election Commissioner is turning out to be a complete rogue, acting like a local gunda with not just senior officers, but also Members of Parliament and Legislative Assemblies. The non-admission of impeachment motion against him is a blot on our democracy.
