California is about to hit residents with some of the biggest tax increases in the last decade, and they start July 1. Private health insurance gets an extra $100 a year. Plus there's a brand new 7.25% tax on digital software and services like Microsoft Office, QuickBooks, Slack, and pretty much everything businesses use. Apple and other big companies are warning this will drive up costs for consumers and everyday products. The state thinks it will bring in about $1 billion. But experts say the real impact could be five or six times higher because the tax stacks on top of itself at every step of doing business. "The person at the end is holding the bag," says CalTax VP David Kline. California already has one of the highest tax burdens in the country, and unlike other states, this one has no real protections for business to business transactions.

In 1970, America's tax-and-transfer system didn't reduce child poverty. It INCREASED it by 4 percent. The government made poor children poorer. Low-income working families paid more in income and payroll taxes than the benefits they received in return. How? The money wasn't targeting the needy, it was funding the expansion of middle-class entitlements by way of Social Security and Medicare. Lyndon Johnson called it the War on Poverty. But Daniel Patrick Moynihan's characterization was more apt: "feeding the sparrows by feeding the horses." This is the permanent flaw in universalizing the welfare state: spread a benefit to everyone and you don't lift the floor for the poor. You tax them to subsidize people who don't need it. And progressives want to run it back. Medicare for All would raise taxes on the poor, elderly, and disabled to pay for coverage now financed privately. A $12,000 UBI would require a 27-point across-the-board tax hike and shrink workers' earnings by $6,000. The answer isn't a big and universal welfare state. It's a better-targeted one. The problem with the welfare state and its confiscatory taxation system is that there are ZERO repercussions if politicians steal your money "legally" and squander it accordingly. Any system that decouples the natural link between causes and effects will lead to disaster. This is why what starts off as a small temporary levying of taxes more than 100 years ago becomes the tax code that we see today. Politicians do not view an individual's hard-earned money as theirs to keep. Rather they view your money as something that they allow you to keep a small portion of. Accordingly, you should be "thankful" that the government allows you to keep any of your money. This "proves" that they are kind and empathetic. It is a complete moral inversion of personal agency, liberty, and freedom. No system should take so much taxes from you that it forces you to work 10 extra years to make up for what was taken from you.

People are astoundingly stupid. My comments about the departure tax is not that I should be treated differently from anyone else. I am making a point about the extent to which taxes are confiscatory. As I have previously explained, there was a time when ZERO cents of income tax were levied in Canada and the US. Then bit by bit, that "temporary" measure, to be applied to only a few, and at a very low percentage rate of your income, becomes a mammoth monster that takes more than 50% of your earnings. It can occur because there are no repercussions if governments do not balance their budgets (other than voting them out). Hence, what starts off as a small temporary tax on a few becomes an existential theft that is orders of magnitude larger than the so-called illegal extortion tax of the Mafia. It can exist only because the great majority of people BENEFIT from this form of parasitic taxation. But someone has to pay for everyone else, and when you are that someone, you are not necessarily pleased to be funding the ultimate Ponzi scheme. I'm making a moral, philosophical, and ethical argument. It's not just about me.

I once had a meeting with several folks at the Department of Education during the Obama administration. I was talking about campus due process, and I made what I thought was a perfectly reasonable point: sexual assault allegations should require due process, but people found guilty of rape should go to jail. The response? โ€œNobody should go to jail.โ€ I pushed a little further, trying to figure out what the hell they were talking about. I clarified that I think too many people are punished for bullshit offenses, but that murderers and rapists should go to jail. No response. That is a luxury belief. Itโ€™s not noble. Itโ€™s extraordinarily selfish.
