Let's take a closer look at the points pointed out by the respected Dr. Ilia Bouchouev. There wasn't much of a catalyst for today's oil sell-off. Trump was just fighting with himself as usual, and we actually got news of production cuts from the UAE. No one is stupid enough to open a massive short position just bc one Aframax made it through. If that were the cause, Brent should have faced even stronger selling. Today's price action mostly stemmed from the SPR. You should pay attention to the fact this SPR release is an exchange, not a simple sale. 86mb RFP was announced, and the exchange terms specify a premium (extra barrels) of 18% to 22%. This release is a kind of physical loan where the government lends oil and gets back a larger amount later. Demanding a premium of around 20% in less than two years is like a high-interest loan with an APR over 10% in financial terms. The US government is a pretty vicious trader, right? Also there are complex spread risks. For example, when returning the Sour crude that came out of West Hackberry, it has to be deposited as Sweet crude at the Big Hill site. Traders participating in the SPR bid have to calculate not just oil price fluctuations, but also the light-heavy spread and transportation costs two years from now. One way to hedge this is to sell prompt WTI and buy the 27/28 calendar spread, taking advantage of the steep backwardation. You just sell the expensive SPR oil now and pay it back by buying cheaper oil later. This is one reason why the price movements at the front and back ends of the WTI curve are so starkly contrasted today. Also, as selling pressure concentrates on the prompt WTI, the Brent-WTI spread widens even further. 86mb is a huge volume, so a 20% premium is definitely not cheap. Traders only break even if oil prices in 2027-28 are at least 20% cheaper than they are now. The risk is clearly there. The DOE is playing tricks. They're demanding high fees from SPR traders while essentially inducing them to put downside pressure on the front of the curve. I think fewer traders might participate in the SPR bid than expected. Since the DOE is playing speculative games like a hedge fund, oil majors might want to avoid taking on that risk. Bessent mentioned today the Treasury hasn't intervened in the oil futures market. I wonder what he thinks about the game the DOE has designed. However the sell-off stemming from this will gradually fade out. #oott #iran
