Even in all that, they’re miserable, their life made tolerable only by fleeting moments of happiness and (far more often) the anesthetic of mindless entertainment. There’s a sickness at the heart of the Simpsons’ society, diagnosed but never treated, only managed.

They live near still-not-wholly-spoiled natural beauty, they’re part of the mainstream religious community and don’t experience racism or any other identity-based source of marginalization.

Rewatching the Simpsons chronologically, which I’ve never done. Not a new observation to say season 1 is surprisingly dark, sad, and—like its Homer—frequently angry or bitter. Interesting to see so many “fixture” characters show up as fresh introductions. Ongoing thoughts🧵
