Flying directly into the night at Mach 3.2 the SR- 71 Blackbird was flying faster than the setting Sun. Dave Dempster SR 71 RSO explains in the book “SR 71 Blackbird Stories, tales and legends” by Rich Graham One afternoon in 1967 Jim Watkins and I took off from Beale Air Force Base, California climbed accelerated to Mach 3, and headed east as we did the approaching horizon was getting darker and darker. We were rapidly flying into nighttime.. using the sun angle display on our ANS ( using the direction from the stars this was before GPS ) I logged the time when the sun went below the horizon heading eastbound when it was dark. We flew on and then made a 180° turn back to the west to California unbelievable…. we witnessed the sky, getting lighter so again using the sun angle display. I logged the time when the sun came out above the horizon heading westbound. SR-71 was so fast that we had outflown the setting sun! As we headed Westward at Mach 3.2 after landing, we had logged 20 minutes of nighttime. All crew members were required to fill out form five flight records. I soon had three clarifying calls from ladies running flight records. How is it possible to takeoff mid afternoon land in the late afternoon and yet log nighttime minutes ?!? Jim Watkins and I patiently explained to them the surprise that it happened to us at Mach 3 plus. Our flight records stayed submitted. What a great story. I knew Dave Dempster and Jim Watkins.
