@crackinggems

I love working with metal, living simply, early retirement and all the time I have to travel. After 15 years, haven’t looked back! Just looking forward 🤞🏻

@DaveEDanna Way to go! Real food, cooked at home, and served at a table, including the whole family! Regardless of ‘food content’, make ‘just enough’, not x2, eat together, have conversation, slows everything down. Leave leftovers for tomorrow! Go for it!

hear DoorDash & food delivery is all the rage with the kids these days, having tried both delivery & home cooked meals, in my humble opinion - this is much better 🤠 You do you, but I’m good with this 🙏

@ChamberofFit Interesting. Years ago, my husband attended a NHS ‘fat club’ (as he named it!) Among other things, his guidance was to eat potatoes to fill you up. Mashed/boiled or baked. Not Fried! Told it fills you up, not processed & reduces your desire to snack, eat or drink other rubbish.

Potatoes are the most satiating food on the planet & loaded with nutrients. They're also low in calories so they'll help you nail your calorie deficit. Make them a staple side.

@NAllison89 There’s been so many responses. 1) yes, probably true re eating out, in US 2) very unlikely in UK, particularly outside London As a parent of some 80’s /90’s kids. Yes- the odd Chinese, pizza, chippy but not often! The person who delivered it lived nearby…

Two things can be true at once. One: That people in the 80s and 90s did eat out at restaurants and fast food places more than their parents did. Two: They did it like once a week on the weekend, not everyday and not multiple times a day.

@bull_robin56713 Boomer, born 1955. Totally recognise your world! Windows PC’s and dial-up internet was amazing!! Loved it! Add in mobile phones (mid 90’s?) We thought we were in heaven! Then we learned the ‘touch’ skills for iPhone,iPad! Even in 2011, it was transformational! What next??

Just so you know. We weren’t glued to phones because there weren’t any. We had one house phone, usually in the hall, with a cable stretched halfway up the stairs for privacy. We didn’t have the internet. Then when we finally did, it screamed at us through a dial-up modem while tying up the phone line. We didn’t have Spotify. We sat by the radio with our finger hovering over the record button waiting for our favourite song. We didn’t have Netflix. We had three TV channels, and one of them shut down at night. We didn’t have Amazon deliveries turning up every day. If you wanted something, you went into town for it. We didn’t have social media followers. We had actual mates knocking on the door asking if you were coming out. We grew up with BMX and Chopper bikes, cassette tapes, Commodore 64s, BBC Micros, fish and chips wrapped in newspaper, and parents telling us to “be home before dark.” Most families weren’t rich. Far from it. But people generally had pride, resilience, manners and a sense of community. People disagreed politically without hating each other. Neighbours knew each other. Kids played outside. Teachers were respected. Police had authority. Life wasn’t perfect by any means. But many of us wouldn’t swap growing up in the 70s and 80s for anything. Yes. I’m early Gen X. Just so you know.
Sandy Tregent@SandyofSuffolk

Just so you know. Boomers didn't have fast food. Except fish and chips. Boomers didn't have ready meals. Except Vesta beef curry. Look it up. Boomers didn't have colour TVs, front loading washing machines, central heating or holidays abroad. Boomers didn't have babymoons or baby showers nor did they go on stag or hen weekends. Boomers didn't go to restaurants. Except on birthdays. Boomers didn't have new clothes every year, every season. They made do and mended. But Boomers had a fabulous time in the 1960s to 1980s because people were friendly, respectful, dignified and hardworking. Boomers also had law and order and a judiciary who punished ALL criminals. Boomers were happy with their lot. Yes. I'm a Boomer. Just so you know.

@EliasGravesLit I was chatting to a friend the other day. (Age ~85) Born in Glasgow, c 1935, lived in a rented tenement with a sink & toilet at the end of each floor. Just imagine an outbreak of dysentery 🤢🤮 We have no clue what life was like. How did you wash, yourself, your clothes!

Dear Gen Z: My mother ate LARD sandwiches when she was a girl. She lived in a dirt floor shack with no electricity or indoor plumbing. She wore dresses made from flour sacks. Fuck you and your whining about the cost of a mocha latte.

@Jenny_1884 Can’t remember when I was last in one? Great experience in Beijing 1997 (sons 11&14. 11yr old wanted western food!) Stood in queue, taken aside, asked to get a seat. Ordered by pictures & great personal service. Sometimes something familiar helps the kids. Don’t judge!

@Kristinartz Lost everything in a fire in 1976. Photo are the thing I miss most! What did I look like as a child? No idea. I have a few photos from friends and family but worst thing is virtually no photos of my brother who died in 1972, age 18. Now, age 70, the only memories are in my mind!

@smilebehappyOO1 But everyone was the same. Friend in my class went to Butlins for a week, 1964. Thought they were millionaires! So far out of reach for most of us. Home made wine! Only affordable way to drink! Big flagons plopping near the stove! Home made blackberry wine was amazing!

We had a takeaway once a year, as a birthday treat. We never ate out & our holiday was over Christmas where we went to spend 2 weeks with family. Our TV was bought using HP, as was the twin tub! We froze in winter with ice on the inside of our windows.
Innocent Bystander@supertolerant

I was young in the 80s/90s in the UK. I don’t remember my parents ever going out to eat, except when we were on holiday (in the UK). I don’t think they ever took me to a fast food restaurant, or ordered takeaway food. People today have no clue how working people lived. /1

@A1an_M @james_e_b_ Aunt lived in NY. Ate out every meal, never cooked! Shocked, visiting us in NI, in 60/70’s to find we cooked from scratch, only went to restaurants for special occasions! We lived in a seaside town, so a couple of chippies as a treat. 1st Chinese age 19! McD 80’s in Edinburgh

@james_e_b_ Because in 1980 there were fewer than 100 McDonalds outlets in the UK, so most people lived a long way away from the nearest one. I don't think I was in one until I was about 18 or 19.

@sophielouisecc @JMcMurdockMP In Scotland, the sgian-dubh with the kilt, should also be included. They only have 3in blades, and while only worn with the kilt, they could easily inflict a wound. There are now many harmless replicas available in Scotland. Time for the Sikh to consider a similar solution

We have to ban ceremonial knives James And we must get justice for our Henry. Happy to help you in any way possible - to begin a conversation on banning the ceremonial knife If the govt think carry pepper spray too dangerous, then some people certainly shouldn’t be able to carry a knife.

My deepest condolences to the family of Henry Nowak. I’ve thought about his passing a lot this week. Henry may have passed in Southampton but he lived in Thurrock. He went to the same academy trust as my children. His grieving family are a stones throw away. To my mind, there is no debate on the topic of carrying ceremonial knives. Allowing some people to carry a knife is absurd in the extreme. The fact we have decision makers in our establishments that have allowed this because they are more concerned with cultural sensitivity than basic common sense is infuriating, and here we see the tragic results. Another life lost, senselessly taken in the most unnecessary of circumstances. RIP Henry

I assure you I’m not posting this as an ad for McDonald’s. I’m posting it because this has saved me from making much worse decisions more times than I can count. When I’m traveling, working an event, stuck in a hotel, or short on time, this is one of my emergency buttons: • Burger patties • Cheese (I know. Leave it off if you don’t want it.) • Pickles (I know. Leave it off if you don’t want it.) • Onions (I know. Leave it off if you don’t want it.) • Water or black coffee • Back to work Is it grass-fed ribeye with pasture-raised eggs cooked at home? No. Is it a hell of a lot better for me than grabbing a bag of chips, cookies, candy, seed oils, flour, and sugar from the nearest convenience mart? Absolutely. And this is the part people miss. For me, staying on track isn’t about “calories.” When I keep added sugar, processed carbs, grains, seed oils, and hyper-palatable junk out of my diet, my hunger, cravings, body weight, and body fat all regulate at a completely different level. When I let those foods back in, it’s not one innocent snack. It can become a cascade. More hunger. More cravings. More negotiating. More “I’ll get back on track tomorrow.” I know because I lived it. So no, this isn’t my ideal meal. But it keeps me on my path. Sometimes the win is not finding the perfect food. Sometimes the win is finding the “good enough” option that prevents the spiral.

@WingsScotland 2 Labour canvassers in person. No-one else. Constituency boundaries have changed. Solid labour seat, merged with 1/3 of a solid SNP seat. They’re definitely putting the effort in. The rest obv not bothered.

@WingsScotland @SteveSayersOne The physical canvassers I have seen were both Labour. To be fair, the constituency has changed. Edinburgh South. A merge between Daniel Johnson (labour) and Ash Regan, originally SNP, now independent… So labour v keen! No other canvassers. And only a few flyers?
