“I don’t like to demonize anything that we eat, especially something with added sugars. They are not healthy for you, that is a fact, but I don’t think we should demonize anything that is in EVERYTHING? […] just be conscious consumers and try to be as healthy as we can.” #quotes

Give A Shit About Nature
Give A Shit About Nature@giveashitnature·
The banana peel you tossed on the trail is going to get a bear killed. Every single apple core and orange peel left on a trail teaches a nearby bear that human hiking trails are a food source. In bears, it is almost always fatal. Wildlife managers have a phrase for it: "A fed bear is a dead bear." Once a bear associates humans with food it keeps coming back. It gets bolder. It approaches campsites. It gets too close to people. At that point there is no rehabilitation, no relocation that reliably works. The bear gets euthanized. The bear didn't do anything wrong. It learned exactly what we taught it. Leave no trace means leave no trace. Pack it in. Pack it out. Every time.

Starbucks announced it will expand tipping to make it easier for customers to tip baristas across the US. The company is also adding bonuses in stores that meet certain goals. Except for union baristas. The coffee giant won't extend these benefits to its unionized stores, as it continues engaging in some of the most egregious and rampant union busting in modern US history. @SBWorkersUnited says baristas will largely have to rely on customers and management’s discretion for the extra compensation announced Thursday. The union also says it will continue to fight for a contract addressing pay, hours and store staffing.

“Some women are too ugly to be sexually harassed.” A lot of people think this, and it’s sick. They think if they deem someone ugly, then they couldn’t possibly have been SA’ed. Kanye is disgusting for helping spread that narrative.

In 2024, a Senate committee investigated how airlines were increasingly nickel and diming customers at every opportunity. Specifically, they scrutinized the fee structures of American, Delta, United, Frontier, and Spirit, and how the airlines were separating normal aspects of flying — like bags and seat selection — from ticket prices in order to charge additional fees. What they found was shocking. Rather than competing with each other to offer the best deals to customers, airlines were raising fees in lockstep. From 2018 to 2023, those five airlines generated $12.4 billion in additional revenue just for charging flyers to choose their own seats. And from 2022-23, gate agents at Frontier and Spirit were paid $26 million in incentives to force passengers to pay bag fees for not following carry-on policies. The airlines admitted to the committee that the extra fees weren’t directly tied to the actual cost to the airline for things like baggage transport or making seat assignments, and said they didn’t even regularly track the specifics of how much those services cost. Airlines also used this strategy to avoid paying a 7.5% transportation excise tax, the committee found, by classifying taxable services as “optional” to customers. All of this was on top of increasingly using dynamic pricing and customer data to max out how much they could charge for a ticket — before any of these extra fees came into play. United's press release on this new update says it “makes it easier for customers to find the flight experience that best matches their preferences." But it's clear this strategy has nothing to do with making things easier for customers and everything to do with making more money.

ICYMI: United is rolling out "basic" business and premium economy fares. No changes, no seat selection, no lounge access. It's a price hike in disguise: Standard fares will go up. You pay the same to get less. That is how this industry works. thriftytraveler.com/news/airlines/…

Ohio just set the bar by making it a felony to harm any cat or dog. The Ohio Supreme Court ruled 7 to 0 that the state's felony animal cruelty law, known as Goddard's Law, applies to all cats and dogs regardless of whether they have an owner. The law is named after Dick Goddard, a beloved Cleveland weatherman and animal rights advocate. Before the ruling, an appeals court found that only pets receiving care qualified for felony protection, meaning harming a stray was only a misdemeanor. The case began when Alonzo Kyles poured bleach on a stray kitten in a Cleveland apartment basement in 2021. He was convicted and sentenced to nine months but the conviction was overturned on appeal. The Humane Society, Alley Cat Allies, the Cleveland Animal Protective League, and the Animal Legal Defense Fund all filed briefs urging the Supreme Court to reverse. The ruling makes Ohio one of the strongest states in America for animal protection law.

France made this wastefulness illegal cause it’s cruel and only causes more waste issues. Any food market or restaurant over 400 square meters has to donate all their good unsold food to charities and are fined if they do anything like this. That law should be applied everywhere
MatrixMysteries@MatrixMysteries

An American showed what his local Krispy Kreme does with unsold donuts at night. Straight into the trash. After private equity took over, the price of a dozen climbed to $22. And instead of selling them cheaper… They’d rather WASTE the food than lower the profit margin.
