@dosfloris You shouldn't pay for editorial, it's advertising the minute you pay. They haven't but people are blurring lines to create lazy "solutions". The financial sustainability is a huge issue.

Trying to get press coverage for some amazing music and it needs saying again. You should not be paying for a review, that is not a review it is advertising!! It is not editorial if you buy it. The law is clear on that. 1/2

@journothornhill I agree with you. Of course they should make money but paying for editorial just seems wrong. Advertising is another matter. But as you say perhaps they have become entwined. And perhaps it’s a reflection of the lack of £ in the industry. I never knew that re 39 years ago!

@dosfloris I think publications and journalists should make money and it is to scrape survival. But the blurring between editorial and advertising is dirt. Music press was far more money orientated 39 years ago when the lonely was rolling i.

@kittybone @harrietjw Yep and not only the contract. I got mine checked from top to bottom and I still got shafted. You need to really know WHO you are signing to and always licence yr copyright for a defined period of time.

98% of signed artists never make a penny on their music… Although the tides are turning I still speak with artists all the time who: ‘juSt wANna Be Siggggned’ These are the things I make sure they know before they fully commit to that dream:

@harrietjw Excellent question! They can provide the umph and drive (coldplays viva la Vida) the dreaming (yo-to ma’s the swan) tearing of heart strings (Elgar cello concerto) and the fear (Hitchcocks psycho) Basically everything!!!

Whenever an artist would turn up to play Secret Sessions and they had a cellist with them I knew we were in for a real treat. Why do strings hit so hard?
