From napkin to reality.
Aalto recounting his Church of Holy Ghost design process: “Sometimes the hand knows before the head. The napkin was small, the idea large.”
Nov 22, 1958 – Restaurant Leinehotel, Hanover.
Pastor Erich Bammel leans across the table: “Herr Aalto, will you design our church in Wolfsburg?”
Alvar Aalto, 60, says nothing.
Pulls a white paper napkin toward him.
Takes a pencil.
In 100 seconds – the time it takes the waiter to refill coffee – he draws the entire Heilig-Geist-Kirche.
Everything is there:
• the asymmetric fan-shaped hall opening to the altar
• the soaring concrete vault that rises like a frozen hymn behind the cross
• three parallel skylight ribbons slicing divine light across 500 seats
• the 32 m freestanding campanile (a single bold stroke)
• the sheltered courtyard hugging church, parish house, vicarage
• a tiny cross marking the copper-pyramid baptistery skylight
• contour lines hugging the Klieversberg hill
He pushes the napkin back.
Signs it:
“Für Wolfsburg – mit herzlichen Grüßen, Alvar Aalto”
1959 site plan = napkin enlarged
1960 working drawings = napkin traced
1961 concrete = napkin poured
1962 consecration = napkin made eternal, deviation < 10 cm
Göran Schildt called it “the most productive lunch in 20th-century sacred architecture.”
