Did Sparta's strategy of glorifying virile elite males and giving them everything they could want work to sustain Spartan population? No, the Spartiates went extinct. Did the loss of a virile pagan culture lead to Roman fertility decline and did Christianity only tweak around the edges? No, fertility declined in Rome at the peak of paganism (probably due to urbanization), and Christianity was associated with a broad-based increase in fertility, including for Latinate elites. Did Athens have a vigorous phallus-cult associated with high birth rates? No, Athens neither had such a phallus-cult of note, nor did any ancient authors or modern scholars ever claim Athenians had especially high birth rates. Greek demographic expansion was caused by modestly reducing child mortality.

To what extent is the use of the word ‘nice’ in this context simply a linguistic sleight of hand used to justify and rationalise anything from a lack basic human decency and respect, to normal social reciprocity, to outright cruelty to those who have been good towards you?
Doesn’t it sound like something an entitled person would say? ‘No, it’s not me, it’s you. You’re not allowed to be hurt by my rudeness and disrespect, in fact *you* were the bad person by being good to me in the first place.’
