Ridiculous article from @rorysutherland sellotape was not called “sticky backed plastic” It was the name given to “vinyl wrap” brand name fablon. Sellotape was called sticky tape…. 1/

I know that from watching the BBC as a child, when two linguistic absurdities drove the seven-year-old me practically insane. One was the Blue Peter habit of referring to Sellotape as ‘sticky-backed plastic’, a phrase unspoken by anyone else in any other circumstances, except in parodies of BBC children’s programmes. Worse still was the practice of BBC continuity announcers maintaining the pretence that a cartoon which was obviously called Top Cat, which featured a theme song which made repeated reference to its protagonist as Top Cat…was somehow called Boss Cat. ✍️ Rory Sutherland Article | spectator.com/article/the-bb…

@DrMatthewSweet @spectator A quick search 👀 would have informed Rory that there was a cat food 🐈⬛ brand called Top Cat! So the BBC changed the title card. Later repeats after 1989 would use the original US title card… it’s not difficult to understand

Come on, @spectator - “sticky backed plastic” was a euphemism for FABLON. They called Sellotape “sticky-tape” - as did lots of people.

We’ve been told @darrenpjones is “unavailable” despite him doing every other channel and radio station on the broadcast round. No explanation given. The only way to claim asylum is to enter the country & set foot on UK soil. Unless you open up safe routes. Then the only way to enter the country & claim asylum is through irregular means! Where are you going to deport people to? You need returns agreements with countries 🙄

Having worked as a Brexit Minister in this department, I can’t say that this is at all surprising.
The civil service did not want Brexit to happen.
