IRAN 🚨 Yes, another Iran U.N. Security Council meeting 10amET ~ today on U.N. sanctions. Remember, back in September when the U.N. Security Council voted to re-impose Iran ‘snapback’ sanctions, after France, along with the United Kingdom and Germany, initiated a process to reimpose sanctions through the "snapback mechanism" in the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)? In a complicated procedural issue, the EU & US position is that the 1737 sanctions on Iran are operational and legal, while Russia and China maintain that the "snapback" is void ~ putting the Sanctions Committee in limbo ~ one of the reasons that the U.S. Program of Action was not approved for March (US is working with a Plan of Action).

I'm told 8 govs 🇫🇷🇩🇪🇪🇸🇵🇹🇱🇺🇧🇪🇸🇪🇸🇮 criticised the decision to attend at coreper. 4 🇮🇹🇭🇺🇸🇰🇬🇷 praised it. 15 were silent. 14 EU governments sent their own observers, including Germany even though they criticised the Commission going 🤷♂️ The other 7 governments who criticised the Commission's observer status did not send anyone to the inauguration.
