the most noticeable change in season 3 is yumi’s position. starting as an ordinary office worker in season 1, becoming an aspiring writer in season 2, and finally a star writer in season 3.
it’s not just about changing romantic partners. yumi herself evolves with each season. that’s why viewers keep coming back.
rather than wondering who the next man will be, they’re curious about where yumi stands now. they come for the romance, but end up rooting for one person’s life.
kim goeun has portrayed that growth with the same consistency for five years. that is the series’ greatest asset. her yumi in season 1 and season 3 is the same, yet with a completely different face.
kim goeun said, “yumi was the first project where i took on a sole leading role. i think i’ve learned how to apply the wisdom and know-how i gained struggling through my 20s to this project now in my 30s.”
the awkwardness of her early 30s and the weight of her mid-30s weren’t expressed through acting alone, but carved through time itself. it was only possible because the actor aged alongside the character. both the actor and the character grew.
that’s why the series never wavered even as the male lead changed. what held the identity of the series together wasn’t the romantic partner, but yumi herself and kim goeun, who has stayed with her for five years.
