Eventually, our life will come to an end, and we will leave everything behind. We were born empty-handed, and we will die the same way. All we’ve gathered in life will eventually be left behind. Everything will continue without us.

If we resist change, we experience stress and dissatisfaction.

As we focus on the breath, notice how each one is slightly different. This reflection on impermanence is a central part of the path.

Reflect on how everything is changing in your life, your body, the thoughts in your mind, the days, weeks, months, and years.

So, let’s begin our meditation by finding a good posture, focusing on our breath to settle the mind.

His father couldn’t protect him from sickness, aging, and death, so he was left to contemplate the impermanence of life. This profound realisation was the beginning of Buddha’s spiritual path. This meditation on impermanence is one we will also focus on.

Buddha was born into a royal family, the Shakya clan, hence the name Shakyamuni. He was a prince, born into a palace with many beautiful material things. He was well looked after, had everything he could possibly desire, and the palace was protected from the world outside.

The design of this course is such that we’ll go through a series of different practitioners, different masters.

With the Zen training, we sit and observe happily by the river, gently recognising that there are no sides to the river.

It doesn’t matter how long it’s going to take, we just make a start. Living and abiding in each moment.

We are not trying to rationalise with our neurosis, we see through them. Neurosis = never-ending mental issues.

It’s fair to say that we are the worried well, we have everything we need but we are still worried. Our plate is full, but it still feels like we need more. In Meditation, we let our neurosis pacify.
