I don't know. I think the main takeaway is that having an ignorant, impulsive, easily manipulable president who could not be bothered to make the case for war to the public nor plan for the obvious consequences is really, really bad.

The main takeaway from the Iran war is that American domestic politics is the greatest impediment to US military success. Our military put on a clinic but American constituencies have done everything possible to prevent a win. China is smiling watching America’s pundit imbeciles.

@Shalom22122122 @RadioFreeTom This point of view is completely understandable, but what are the citizens of these Arab states willing to do about it? I’m sure they’d get complete American support for a ground invasion to depose this reckless Iranian regime. But who is willing to sign up for that?

I find these betting odds strange, from the vantage point of 2026, I think you have to view the 2028 presidential general election result as a pure toss-up that we don’t have any useful information about.

@20committee @RadioFreeTom I mean, yeah, if the public opposes your costly war then you’re not going to win it. That you started it in the first place is the bigger problem and clearly illegal. At least get a war resolution through congress and then at least there is something to talk about

@mattyglesias Personally I was a lot more upset about the response to Biden’s Afgan pullout because it was so broad-based. Were there any Iran hawks opposed to the JCPOA that aren’t also Republican diehards?

@mattyglesias I think it’s becoming clear the endgame is Iranian control of the straights. That does the minimum short term political damage to Trump. I don’t see him risking a real invasion
