It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we have to announce that our long-standing MTI Network Partner for the US and friend to many of us, Jim Lawrence, passed away on Sunday 1st June 2025 after a short illness. Jim was always a much-loved and deeply respected member of the MTI family. Over the years, he worked on numerous high-profile incidents, offering invaluable advice to clients both in the US and internationally. He was not only a trusted advisor but also a prominent figure in the US maritime industry—as the founder of the highly regarded Connecticut Maritime Association’s annual conference, which consistently drew the crème de la crème of the shipping world, and as a key figure at Marine Money. Jim was always a consummate professional but to us he was always Jim – incredibly energetic, hugely good fun and incredibly knowledgeable about the shipping industry. Whether climbing Mt Kilimanjaro or providing sensitive advice to clients he was a force to be reckoned with and will be missed by us all. Whilst I know that we will all miss his energy and drive enormously, MTI Network and the strong US team led by Darrell Wilson USCG (ret.) and Jon Chia together with David Solsbery will continue to support all our clients across the world. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to Jill and all the family at this sad time.

Great news that the 25 crew members of the Galaxy Leader – hijacked in a dramatic helicopter attack on November 19, 2023 – have finally been released and can soon reunite with their families in the Philippines, Bulgaria, Romania, Mexico, and Ukraine. Now, we hope the ship will also be released and returned to its rightful owner.

For MTI, 2024 was our busiest year yet supporting owners, managers, and their Clubs around the world. Our sincere thanks to all those owners and managers who have entrusted their vessels to our care. Across the globe we are building capacity while holding onto our core values of integrity, independence, and unmatched experience. Our Regional MTI Directorates in N. Asia based in Hong Kong, and the SE Asia Directorate based in Singapore, are building teams and fast developing their capability and capacity to meet the growing demand in Asia. Our regional Directorate in Europe, covering Germany the Low Countries and Denmark, based in Rotterdam and that in MTI USA continue to respond to a significant proportion of the 1000 plus incidents handled by MTI annually. London remains the operational centre of the Network as well as supporting our Scandinavian, Greek, Italian and ME clients. Perhaps more important is the fact that 41% of all incidents handled this year have involved social responsibility issues. Racial discrimination, bullying, harassment, sad suicides, and families in denial, have dominated, with many using social media to prosecute their grievances. The response to such actions is both complex and sensitive. With regional conflicts, sanctions and compliance making for an uneasy world for the maritime sector, resilience seems unwavering, yet the business of ‘reputation risk management’ all the more important, with focus on the human element, sustainability and ESG, a new service for our group, being essential to success. Finally, MTI would like to wish all our clients around the world, a very happy Festive Season, and a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year
