If you want to research renderer architecture, copy code, or push new shading and rendering techniques, Spartan Engine is a great place to do it. It's modern, MIT licensed, has a strong community of 600+ people, many of them industry veterans. Link in the comments.

How it feels working with Spartan Engine now that it has GPU driven rendering, a single geometry buffer, bindless textures and samplers, uber shaders, and only a few dozen PSOs, truly Spartan.
