I genuinely think most people using AI do not think much about the question "How do you know if it works?" For programming a webpage, sure. There are use cases where its efficacy (or lack thereof) is evident. If you only use it for these things, it is fine. The problem comes from using it in situations where you aren't in the position to assess its capabilities. Even for something as simple as summarizing a document, if you have not read the document how do you know it summarized it well? If you are using it to explain things you are not an expert in, how do you know it is has done so accurately? It is a matter of faith. If you lack the capacity to verify its output yourself, you are simply relying on an intermediary which may or may not be competent but which you place trust in nevertheless. But of course people are mostly using it to tell them things they don't already know, otherwise they wouldn't need it.
