This coming from a government source. A less supportive assessment of cabinet meeting “Keir said in Cabinet that he wouldn't discuss the elections or his leadership, and that he will only speak to cabinet ministers about that individually. Then after the meeting he refused to see Cabinet ministers individually”

NEW: Understand John Healey told cabinet that people are really worried about the rising conflicts and crises - they’re seeing the impact of that on costs already. And they want the govt to carry the country through Yesterday Trump said the ceasefire was in life support Putin testing our defences A big few weeks for nato ahead of the summit Full focus right now must be on the job of govt - millions of people are depending on us

The media seem genuinely baffled that the PM hasn’t resigned yet Almost like they wrote the ending first and now reality isn’t following the script.

I have today issued a statement calling on the Prime Minister to resign. This is not something I do lightly. I have known and supported him for many years, but the Labour Party is losing the trust of the people we were elected to serve. Full statement below.

The Prime Minister told a meeting of the Cabinet: “As I said yesterday, I take responsibility for these election results and I take responsibility for delivering the change we promised. “The past 48 hours have been destabilising for government and that has a real economic cost for our country and for families. “The Labour Party has a process for challenging a leader and that has not been triggered. “The country expects us to get on with governing. That is what I am doing and what we must do as a Cabinet.”

Whatever complaints MPs have about Keir Starmer, they are now descending into the kind of headless chickenry that - whatever and whoever the outcome - will make the situation even worse for Labour. If there is a grand plan starring Catherine West and a few PPSs, then it doesn’t feel terribly thought through. A period of calm would do none of them any harm. The general election is a fair way off. The next legislative programme is about to be unveiled. There are better ways to reach such an important decision and better times too. You are MPs not commentators who exist to feed a frenzy.

Wes Streeting & Peter Kyle went to watch the Devil Wears Prada over the weekend - here's Peter Kyle's account to me: "Wes and I last weekend we were out campaigning together in Ilford. And let me say, he achieved a stunning result with that whole team in Ilford. That shows what a great campaigner Wes is. After we campaigned, we went for dinner and we went and saw a movie together. Somebody who was planning to pull the plug and launch a leadership bid in a couple of days time, doesn't go to the cinema with a friend. SR: What did you go and see? PK: Devil Wears Prada. SR: Did you discuss the leadership? PK: Wes and I talk about the leadership of the country all the time. Wes and I shared an office together for nine years, we spent so much time talking about the leadership of the country. We almost never spoke about the individual. Wes and I care so much about the future of the country. We have a very shared view of public services in the modern world. About what Britain's potential is amongst our competitive countries. We both care deeply about the opportunities that young people have. Also, we were friends going to the cinema and we had a good laugh about other things as well. Wes and I are very good friends but I'm not going to fall into the trap of being his spokesperson. But what I can tell you is that he, like me, is focused on the success of this government. His primary mission in government is making sure the whole government is a success, and he is there for Keir when he needs him.

Andy Burnham, with as much charisma as a slice of Ryvita becomes Labour leader, leads the party into a Corbyn style election defeat in 3 years time, and a 20 yr wander through the political wilderness. That's what a radical Labour left wing is promoting, backed by sly right media

Where are we after a very febrile and tense weekend? Starmer facing an extremely uncertain 24 hours.... - I've spoken to number of senior figures and they united in genuinely not knowing how next days will pan out. One cabinet minister tells me some MPs really panicking after seeing councillors replace by Reform ones and worried about their futures. Their view is that voting in general election a different question to locals, but some - such as West - think now something just has to happen. - There is a big push from Burnham backers to just calm it down, steady the ship, reflect on what’s happened, draw up a strategy and allow Starmer to continue, and try to be unifying figure, for now amid deep splits over succession. Some have been trying to get West to pull back "it's completely irresponsible [of West]", says one - Streeting allies clear that health secretary won’t trigger a challenge, but equally he is ready to stand if a contest happens. Some of his supporters want him to go now, arguing that this is his best change and that what Streeting needs to a coronation as membership won’t back him - On that, the idea that the soft left would let Streeting through without a contest is not a goer, which is where Rayner comes in. The former deputy leader has issued a statement, telling the PM to meet the moment and allow Burnham must be allowed back to parliament - we need ‘our star players on the pitch’. She also, in a lengthy statement, sets out a manifesto for change - calling for tax rises for wealthy to cut the cost of living. Clearly keeping options open - Can West get the numbers to trigger the ballot? There are just over 30 MPs so far that have said he should go. One senior figure thinks she won’t, saying that MPs have to put their names publicly to a statement saying West should be PM over Starmer and thy can’t see that happening. But will there be resignations from junior ministerial ranks on Monday (a number of MPs tell me to expect them), and will the pressure just build and build? - PM said, repeatedly on Friday that he was not walking away and would fight on. He has a crunch speech on Monday. But can one speech really ‘meet the moment’ . Allies are stressing that everything can’t ride on one speech and that MPs should look at the Kings Speech on Weds too. - It is worth saying, there are also a big bunch of Labour MPs that do not want a leadership race now

Lots of people are asking me what is going on with all the Labour leadership speculation. So I’ll say it publicly here. There appears to be an attempt to exploit, for their own ends, Catherine West’s understandable alarm over the catastrophic election results and the dire state the Labour Party is in. Their aim is to bounce the party into a snap leadership contest limited to people who sat in the Cabinet and stayed silent while this Government carried out the very policies that have done such enormous damage and been a gift to Reform. Labour cannot renew itself through a stitch-up by those responsible for the crisis we now face, including the danger of a Trump-style government. Keir must go. But we only get one chance to get this right. So he should set a timetable to stand aside, with a new leader in place by the ends of the year. This would allow for a proper democratic leadership contest with a full range of candidates and a serious debate about how Labour changes course, the policies needed to rebuild support and how we stop Nigel Farage getting the keys to Downing Street.
