COVID-19 and elevated coronary thrombus burden — a persistent risk even after recovery? 🚨And again: COVID doesn’t just end when you recover! #heart In this single-centre UK study of 167 patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), prior COVID-19 infection (n=22) was linked to significantly worse coronary findings compared to uninfected (n=76) or vaccinated (n=69) patients (June 2020–May 2021): ➡️1. Higher rates of coronary artery ectasia/aneurysm: 57.1% vs 30.3% (uninfected) and 27.5% (vaccinated), p=0.034. ➡️2. Increased coronary thrombus burden: 61.9% vs 33.3% (uninfected) and 52.6% (vaccinated), p=0.019. ➡️3. No difference in 1-year all-cause mortality (p=0.166). #limitations ➡️4. Prior infection patients were younger with fewer traditional risk factors yet showed more severe angiographic features. ➡️5. Vaccination alone showed no increased risk of thrombus or ectasia. ‼️Findings suggest prolonged hypercoagulability and endothelial dysfunction after COVID-19 infection. “In conclusion, our findings support the notion that COVID-19 infection is associated with increased risk of coronary artery ectasia/aneurysm and coronary artery thrombosis and provides further evidence to the clinical mechanisms underlying long-term increased cardiovascular events after COVID-19.” “The study has implications for post-pandemic clinical practice, where these findings provide compelling evidence for the potential for long-term increased cardiovascular events after COVID-19, while raising the question of how to best address these risk factors, particularly in post-infected patients without prior immunisation.” ‼️Even with the clear study limitations, this study delivers hard visual proof that prior COVID-19 infection leaves coronary arteries more prone to dangerous clots and abnormal dilation, evidence that strengthens the case for viewing COVID as a lasting vascular risk factor. ‼️So, prior COVID-19 infection causes a lasting, elevated risk of severe coronary thrombus and artery ectasia even after recovery, a risk not seen with vaccination in this study! #AvoidSars2 #AvoidReinfections journals.viamedica.pl/cardiology_jou…
