Also, I am specifically referencing the image from the OP, the flowers may have been added by an AI, as OP already noted was a possibility. Here is a comparison image of a reproduction from the same study, you'll note fairly obvious diffusion artefacts all over the reproduction. If the image was generated in the background, you would see noticeable differences in minute details that aren't just the result of compression from encoding.

@FunkyTK1 @aurora_kosmik @mauthe_doog The only thing this is says is that it memorizes and regenerates individual training images. It does not say how common it is (which is why I point to 4.2.2), it also does not say anything about the quality of the regeneration.

It's actually not common for exact reproductions, about 0.03% of Stable Diffusion 1.4 was capable of being reproduced and that's an older model. Training methods have improved since then which should lower the number further. 4.2.2 for the source: arxiv.org/pdf/2301.13188 Even for reproductions it's extremely unlikely to have details be this exact because of how diffusion works, it's likely that this was done by the artists themselves.

@mauthe_doog Its very common, but its more likely to happen if the prompt specifically mentions a particular piece. Even if the just used the ai to add flowers, this could have easily been done in photoshop from the beginning.

@MYTHOTROPOS @BIMBOSATTVA_ I almost spit out my drink. Well, there's always the classics, PlaneScape: Torment, Arcanum, if you can stomach the dated graphics. I played through Cyberpunk 2077 recently and it's actually pretty good now that they've fixed most of the bugs.

@ItsSugarThyme Copyright has not been trampled on, training falls under fair use because it's a transformative process and the intent is to synthesize novel content. I would sympathize with you if you talked about how it affects the market, but not if you blatantly misrepresent law.

It's true that an individual work generated by a model it is not considered copyrightable in the U.S. However, the same isn't true when you start arranging those pieces into a new work. For instance, you can still copyright a visual novel that uses only AI artwork.
Sugar Thyme@ItsSugarThyme

@dVcxTwD9b4mGFSK @yakimanzyu0 @MaroYonebayashi I'm not sure what the law is exactly in Japan, but I know in America, copyright is very strictly for human-made stuff. So there's a big difference between machine generated stuff and human-made content in the US.

@ItsSugarThyme For the other point, the arrangement protection would prevent a bad actor from legally re-uploading the VN somewhere else and providing it for free, selling it, claiming it as their own etc. For commercial sale of these works you still get protection, which is very important.

@suvikyi But how many people are stealing the arrangements of a visual novel? To me, it feels more like they asked for that copyright to say, "I have a copyright," and make it seem like they own more than they do. Most people aren't even aware you can copyright the arrangement like that.

@ItsSugarThyme You'd do that anyway, when you file copyright for something like a VN you file for multiple layers of protection anyways, it's a single fee, so there's no extra amount you're paying for the protection of arrangements.

@suvikyi I know we have automatic copyright, but that's someone who submitted the work. So they undoubtedly would have paid a fee for that.

@ItsSugarThyme If people confuse the holder saying they have copyright over the work with the individual pieces within it that's not their fault. Saying it's a nefarious act to "make it seem like they own more than they do" is just you trying to default anyone who claims it as unethical, right?

@ItsSugarThyme Also you do not have to pay for copyright. If you make something original, you have the copyright to that by operation of the law. No symbol and no copyright notice is needed either, just makes it easier to defend. The only thing you have to be able to do is prove you created it.

@suvikyi For stuff like that, they copyright things like the composition, not the art. I honestly don't think there's much value in that... Has a legal case over a copyright like that ever been won? I'm not sure. It seems like paying for nothing.

This is not what's happening overseas, there are lawsuits, but over individual pieces of work. There is no blanket ruling against training as fair use. As far as rulings go for training, they're mostly in favor of the Fair Use Doctrine. There was one ruling against it, but they were training an AI that regurgitated text verbatim while also directly competing with them in business. Training on copyright works in America (provided they were obtained lawfully and not pirated) so far is perfectly fine. To my knowledge, only Suno as a service was shut down recently. As for criticism, there's truth to that on SNS, but regular people are indifferent and many of them even use or play around with gen AI.

@sadlers333 ほぼ日本だけですね。海外じゃ訴えられ一般ユーザーに批判されまくりサービス終了もどんどん出て来ています。 何でというか…利権狙う連中が政治家周辺に蔓延ってるのが大きいですね

@jbo293261440851 @tmichiaki It learns patterns like line thickness, shapes, styles, textures, lighting and anatomy, then it generates brand new pixels by reversing noise. It doesn't store tiny pieces of image and stitch them together.

@Samiwammywammy No, the risks that arise with a password or shared 2FA secret are nothing like the risks associated with digital ID verification. This is nothing like entering a password to access an account.

@suvikyi You can say the same thing about entering a password, or 2FA, you just have to go through it, because it's the only option.

@Samiwammywammy Yeah, because that totally stops kids from getting alcohol right? It's sad the world is the way that it is, but any form of digital id verification is extremely prone to being abused, and we cannot trust it to be implemented safely by state actors.
