This is my friend Jamie. To Boston radio DJ’s, he’s better known as “Jamie Minton from Milton”. For those not in radio, this story may get lost on you, but for those in radio who have received a letter or call from Jamie, you will get it. I 1st learned of Jamie back in 1996 when I was an intern for Baltazar & Pebbles at JAM’N 94.5. Without fail, there would be a letter in every DJ’s mailbox almost daily from Jamie and they would all be the same. He would want us to say hi to all of the pretty girls who didn’t have boyfriends and would ask for CD’s, key chains and other radio swag. Over the past 30 years, I’ve got to know Jamie well. I’ve been to the special group home he lives in for Halloween parties. I’ve had him be my guest at concerts. I’ve been to his grandfathers funeral. I’ve always had a soft spot for Jamie. Without getting into the weeds, Jamie is a unique and special soul. He has worked at Stop & Shop in Quincy for over 25 years. He goes to a day program each day and has many friends there. He has volunteered at a hospital on his day off to deliver books and magazines to patients. He is a year round athlete in the Special Olympics. He is always doing something. His family circle has shrunk over the years. His mother, who early on was so nice to me and brought Jamie to many radio events had passed away many years ago. Before she passed, she wrote me a nice letter thanking me and many others in Boston radio for being so kind to her son and it gave her peace knowing there were kind people out there who cared for her son. Fast forward to today. Jamie had asked me a few weeks go to come to Mix when I was on-air do a tour as he has never been there. Of course I said yes and his cousin Melissa reached out to me to work the details out. He would also be bringing his friend Sandy from his day program along. Jamie came in today with the biggest smile as always on his face. He was proud an excited to introduce me to his cousin and his friend. Gave me a big hug at the door. He came down to the studio and was in awe to see it. To see where Karson, Kennedy, Dan, Gregg, Freddy, Andrea sit. He wanted to see the “Can’t Beat Kennedy” board is. He must have taken 100 pictures today! It made me realize a few things. 1, the amazing power of radio and being live & local. The bonds made with listeners. The company we as on-air personalities provide listeners in their day. Maybe we make them forget about the stress they face. The traffic they are in. The crappy job they go to. The personal problems they face. For Jamie, he loves every single radio station and every single on-air personality in Boston and has for 30 years. Whether they are not on the air any longer, are new to radio or have been around a long time, he remembers you and loves you. This is a guy who has every reason in the world to not be happy with the cards hes been dealt in life. Jamie doesn’t know how to be unhappy. He wakes up each day, puts the radio on, makes calls to the various request lines, writes his letters, goes to his day program, works his job at Stop & Shop, has various activities he participates in and does it all with a smile. He lives his life with a smile and is a kind, thoughtful, caring, hard working human. No matter the situation, he just smiles and always tells you that he loves you. So in the video I posted, he mentions many Boston DJ’s. He knows he left many out and as he was leaving he felt bad he left so many names out. To those who he didn’t mention, trust me. He said your name today and loves you. It was in the minute and he was under the gun and just excited. While we are competitors, this video doesn’t matter. We all have had an impact in Jamie’s life simply by saying hi to him. Answering his calls. Reading his letters. Giving him tours of the studios. Being his friend. For that, I say thank you to all of you and great job! (Continued in comments)
