Beautiful British Australian Architecture - Craig’s Royal Hotel, Ballarat An absolute hidden gem that flies under the radar, tucked away in Ballarat, Victoria. It is an ornate Victorian masterpiece. Craig's is one of the most historic hotels in the region, and is significant as the site of the Royal Commission into the Eureka Stockade, workplace of Adam Lindsay Gordon, a temporary Ballarat Town Hall, the lodge for visiting Mark Twain, and birthplace of the Melbourne Racing Club, originators of the Caulfield Cup. (The first Victorian Amateur Turf Club race was run at Dowling Forst, outside of Ballarat - before moving to Caulfield, and becoming the Caulfield Cup) Originally built and opened as one of the earliest licensed premises as Bath’s Hotel in 1853, Walter Craig purchased the building from Thomas Bath and re-opened it as Craig's in 1857. I have thought about this quite deeply, and I think there must be a concerted effort to remove welcome to country from all civic and sporting events. We must replace it with something more fair and reconciliatory between the two ethnic groups, something that speaks to the bond we now share though a shared history, how far we have come as a nation, what both our ancestors have achieved collectively and what we can achieve in future together, all as Australians. Both groups should be acknowledged, aboriginal and Anglo European. This is the only way to move forward in a positive manner and we must be united under one flag as a people, otherwise division will fester. In the current format it insults and marginalises anglo Australians, and makes us feel a sense of dispossession and disrespect. If we were to have nothing and to make no reconciliatory gestures, aboriginals would also feel ignored and marginalised. There must be a middle ground where we can advance forward together.

As a conservative, I actually don't mind the IDEA of welcome to country. But people object to it because it doesn't FEEL like a welcome. If you tell people their ancestors founded an illegitimate nation, you are telling them this country is not theirs & they don't belong here.
