It is important to ground our understanding of AI in reality and to demystify it. We are really using trace and surveillance data to push machine learning, but is sure isn't magic. It's pretty brittle so breaks down pretty quickly.

NYT "AI" explainer misleads. Deep learning techniques date from the 1980s, & "AI" had been hot/cold for decades, not slow until 2012. There was no new "single idea" in 2012. What WAS new, & propelled the AI boom, was concentrated resources (data/compute) controlled by tech cos 1/

It seems we've entered a whole new phase of #AIHype discourse. The good news: There seems to be some movement towards creating regulation. The bad: A lot of it seems to be informed by #AIHype coming from BigTech --- even among those who would work to limit the power of tech cos.

Sen @BernieSanders you are right that we need regulation to ensure tech development that actually benefits everyone. Machine's aren't gathering info. Big Tech is using machines to gather it. Let's keep the focus on keeping corporations accountable. >>

Updates: US flu trends: sharply down. US RSV hospitalizations: sharply down. US Monkeypox: close to zero. Same in Europe. Remember the claims that widespread post-COVID immunodeficiency had caused their earlier rises? If that were true, cases would have to be going up and up.
