6 avril 1966, les Beatles débutent officiellement l'enregistrement de leur nouvel album Revolver. Si les Beatles n'ont encore pris aucune décision sur l'arrêt des tournées, ce n'est clairement plus leur priorité. Le groupe s'épanouit en studio et l'album précédent Rubber Soul le laissait déjà deviner. Revolver fera plus que confirmer cette tendance. Avec les technologies de l'époque, on imagine en effet difficilement un concert composé des titres de Revolver, d'autant plus couvert par les cris des fans. Un événement motivera encore plus les Beatles à soigner particulièrement Revolver, la publication en mai 66 de l'album Pet Sounds des Beach Boys. Pour Lennon et surtout McCartney, il était impossible que les Beatles ne soient plus le groupe le plus créatif en se contentant d'être le plus populaire.
