This evening in #NewYork, the @MiddleEastInst convened a high-level gathering of 250+ diplomats, journalists & business leaders for a historic event with #Syria's President Ahmed al-Sharaa. We had a fascinating discussion on domestic issues, foreign policy & more.

A decade ago I had ordered @Charles_Lister’s book and in between work breaks would read (what was then assumed) about our current president. Today, I find myself coordinating this event with MEI and the President of Syria, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, in New York. We call this أحلام العصر.

I was honored to attend the meeting with President Sharaa last week where we discussed a range of topics including Israel, the SDF, and Syria's future. Other attendees have covered the political discussion, but there were several institutional comments I found important

Disinformation around #Syria is rife & dangerous. This is a wildfire in a region inhabited by Sunnis, Christians & Alawites. A @SyriaCivilDefe firefighter was killed trying to protect one village overnight. Shame on those sowing fictional sectarian narratives just for clicks.

An honor to attend. Al-Sharaa’s message to the US Syrian community was clear: reconstruction is ahead, and you all must be part of it. My takeaway: the economy is everything—solve it and even your critics will rally, fail and even your supporters will turn. And yet, all domestic issues pale beside the Israeli question.

Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa during a panel discussion moderated by veteran researcher @Charles_Lister at the Middle East Institute in New York: 📌 We activated diplomatic efforts to engage in dialogue with Israel. 📌 Any partition of Syria would harm neighboring countries and destabilize regional security. 📌 Transitional justice is underway, and remnants of the former regime are being prosecuted. 📌 The unity of Syria lies at the core of our security stability policy. 📌 The mistakes in Sweida were made by all sides, and our choice is reconciliation. 📌 Washington can help integrate the Kurds into the Syrian armed forces. 📌 Israel must accept the deployment of UN forces, as stipulated in the 1974 agreement. 📌 It is in no one’s interest for Syria to return to the previous state of affairs.

All across #Damascus tonight, mosques are calling out prayers to mark the 12yr anniversary of the killing of 1,400 people in a Sarin nerve agent attack on Eastern Ghouta. This is the 1st anniversary without #Assad — but accountability is still to come.

#Syria's border with #Lebanon continues to present security challenges. Today, a weapons shipment & a drugs shipment were seized in separate raids by #Syria's gov't -- both a result of smuggling into/from #Lebanon.

Aleppo International Airport received the inaugural flight of Turkish carrier A Jet, arriving from Istanbul. This follows a 13 year hiatus of direct flights between the cities as Turkey and Syria strengthen aviation ties.
