Birth entry of Thomas Donohoe, 1863, who may have made one of the most fateful errors in Scottish sport: helping to popularise football in Brazil! Donohoe introduced factory workers in Rio De Janiero to the sport. Scotland’s long #WorldCup rivalry with Brazil resumes in June.

On this day in 1959, the laying of a new Transatlantic cable was announced, linking #Gairloch with Corner Brook, Newfoundland, primarily to improve air trafic control over the North Atlantic. The cable, which passed through Iceland and Greenland, was jointly financed by 14 countries [photo from the collections at Gairloch Museum]
