Getting married is the easy part. Staying happily married is very challenging and needs a lot of things, including attention, compromise, patience, and perseverance. It’s easy to lose track of what’s important, meaning after several attempts, your spouse can get tired. Hopefully, you don’t get to this point, but here are a few signs you may notice: Lack of communication: A spouse tired will have less and less to discuss with you. More frequent misunderstandings: Even when you do talk, it leads to more arguments and fights. Lack of care and personal interaction: Interaction reduces and when it does happen, will be about basic things like welfare and children, nothing personal to you both. Intimacy suffers: It becomes difficult to get intimate, and where it manages to happen is like a chore, no passion. Loss of care: The care stops being there easily. Even when you are unwell, it would be difficult to show empathy. No more plans with you: Because communication is almost not happening, you get less of everything, including plans, goals, and aspirations. They stop investing in the marriage: You’d notice the push for you or for the marriage just stops. What do I do? This is the time to be honest with yourself and ask how your spouse got to this point. A human will only try for so long, at a point, the spouse gets tired. If your spouse has gotten to this point, it can be difficult to get them back if you don’t first tell yourself the truth that you need to do better. Go back into your thoughts honestly and remember when it was all good. What did your spouse constantly seek and demand for? When you find that answer, begin to give it in the marriage. Pay attention more, engage, and be more patient. A spouse at this phase can be difficult to win back, so you’d also need to persevere as you try to rebuild. Consistency: A person truly remorseful will not keep going back to what’s being apologised for. Straightforward: Genuine apology will not seek to manipulate or twist the narrative. Openness: Genuine apology will be based on facts, all of it without holding anything back. A common example can be drawn from infidelity where many will claim to be sorry because they were caught but not truly able to leave. Instead, it would be followed by changed passwords or seeking a new way to hide the actions. This may then be followed by manipulated facts, outright lies, and gaslighting follows where proof has not been kept to the point where the culprit gets bold enough to get angry while trying to claim being innocent. Where the above happens, it’s almost always a reflection of insincerity of intentions or actions, which eventually unravels when caught again, and the whole pretense cycle begins again.
