We believe that not only is it time for the ghoulish spectacle that is #Cheltenham ‘Festival’ to be relegated to the history books but for a complete end to the commercial racing of horses - 154 were killed last year alone being raced on UK tracks. 5/

Over the past 10 years more than 30 horses have died being raced at the #Cheltenham ‘Festival’. Looking back to the year 2000, over 80 horses have been killed. AWP repeats its assertion that this loss of life is utterly impossible to justify and shames our nation. 4/

Meanwhile, Saint Le Fort fell at the final obstacle of the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle and was put down. The deaths of Envoi Allen and Saint Le Fort follow the deaths of HMS Seahorse on Wednesday and Hansard on Tuesday. 3/

At 12 years old, Envoi Allen had won three times previously at Cheltenham, but that was not enough to spare him a final race at the event this year, a race that would, ultimately, kill him. He collapsed after the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase and died. #youbettheydie 2/

Like Hansard, killed yesterday, his death was both preventable & predictable. Since the year 2000, 80 horses have died being raced at the Cheltenham ‘Festival’. AWP finds this loss of life impossible to justify. We call for an end to the commercial racing of horses.

❌ AWP is deeply disappointed that MP’s have today voted in favour of new protest restrictions aimed at re-designating life sciences facilities (including animal breeding and testing facilities) as “key national infrastructure”.

That this move has been made only weeks after the government’s ‘Replacing Animals In Science’ strategy, announced to much fanfare in November is completely baffling to many and looks set to undermine trust.
