The goal of this course is to expand students’ understanding of forensic science and gain experience in forensic biology. This course will be co-taught by Drs. McKee-Zech and Juarez.

Forensic Roadtrip will be travelling to sites in lower Michigan to visit the Medical Examiner's Office at WMed and the Kalamazoo Crime Lab. Then students will continue on to the University of Tennessee to visit their forensic facility.

This award will expand Laura’s Master's research beyond the scope of her thesis on carnivore gut microbiome dynamics in Etosha National Park, Namibia, to increase her research and conservation impact on southern Africa's wildlife populations.

This incredible award valued at more than $23,000 includes shotgun metagenomics analysis for gut microbial DNA using the long-read sequencing platform - PromethION 24 by Oxford Nanopore Technologies.

Laura Peirson, NMU Master's student in Dr. Lafferty's Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Science Lab won the South Africa Centre for Proteomic & Genomic Research (CPGR) shotgut metagenomics competition. Congratulation!
