Four years ago this week, a group of ex-orphans arrived at our Ithumba stockades with something very small trailing behind them – a calf just days old, too weak to nurse, with no mother anywhere to be found. The ex-orphans had found him on their wild wanderings and brought him somewhere they knew help could be found. Today, Toto turns four years old. He is gentle, patient, and quietly confident – and still as devoted to his Keepers. Kamili wasn't even supposed to be there. Our Works Manager was en route to check on our boreholes when he came across the lifeless orphan. She was so weak she could barely take a step. Our nearest Keepers were en route in the opposite direction, helping another orphaned elephant on death's door. Delays cost lives, so we mobilised additional support from our Kaluku Field HQ and sent a rescue plane to Satao to meet Kamili. This undoubtedly saved her life. The moment they arrived on the scene, the team gave her drips and shepherded her to the shade, before urgently transporting her to Nairobi. Here, we struggled to bring her back from the brink but, eventually, she recovered. Four and a half years on, Kamili is at our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit and walking tall.
