Among the new-generation banks, only Globus and Providus seem to be doing quite well. Despite being a regional bank (thus the lower total assets), they held it well in terms of profitability. But my focus is on Standard Chartered and how it delivers superior financial metrics. We talk about GTCO's cost of funds, but the niche banks' (i.e., StanChart and Citibank) cost of funds are on another level. This is because the niche guys' customer base heavily skews toward multinational corporates, embassies, development finance institutions, and affluent retail clients who keep large operational balances in accounts that pay near-zero interest. The other lads don't have that advantage. There is also another structural advantage. Stanchart is the FX banker of choice for multinationals operating in Nigeria, which gives them serious deal flow on corporate FX transactions and trade finance. You will see the impact of this on fee and commission income.

I’ve done two banks in five years, spent another two years in fintech, and now I’m in the energy sector. When I interviewed for my current role the CEO didn’t hide her concern. My movement raised questions. Her exact worry was simple: “Will you stay long enough for us to justify the investment?” After the call I thought they wouldn't make an offer. Fortunately they came back with the offer I thought wouldn't come. That experience taught me something most people miss in this conversation. Yes, from an HR standpoint, moving every two years can raise eyebrows. It suggests instability, and companies don’t like uncertainty when they’re investing time and resources into talent. But that’s only one side of the story. The real question is not how often you move. It’s what you carry with you each time you move. This is every employee personal development and value comes in. If every transition reflects growth, stronger thinking, better execution, deeper understanding of business, then your movement starts to make sense. It stops looking like restlessness and starts looking like progression. No serious employer ignores value. Once they see that you are not just switching jobs but building capability, solving bigger problems, and improving your output, the conversation changes. They stop focusing on your past exits and start thinking about what you can deliver if you stay. At that point, the concern is no longer “why did he leave?” but “how do we make him stay?” And when a company is confident they can create that environment, they will make the offer.

“For Nigeria, the recent surge in inflows is encouraging, but it is not yet victory. The real challenge lies ahead: building an economy strong enough that when capital inevitably moves as it always does—it does not leave instability behind.” From an article on FPIs. KSB.

Revelation : 1 : 18 - I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. Happy Easter Sunday. #Yeshua
