@ADHalliwell A friend is a bit of a collector and has a thing about LB. Went round to his for a tasting of various bottles from his cellar ("tell me you have too much money without telling me you have too much money") and the LB was head-and-shoulders above everything else he opened.

@ADHalliwell This is exactly why we have / had Polish builders, Baltic fruit pickers and Pakistani care workers doing the jobs Brits don't want to do at any price. Come over here, work cheaply, send money back home. Whisper it, but we've demonised the very people who made our economy work.

@CambWineBlogger Exactly, I was thinking about this a while ago. If you're able to save 10% of your wages, Switzerland or Norway are probably the best places to work in Europe, just in financial terms, or maybe London. Here in Rioja we're in our own little bubble, but you notice it when you leave

Had a great trip to the #Alicante area, but I found wine a bit expensive. I already thought that my home town Logroño was good value for wine and tapas, and this trip has reinforced that. If you live outside of Spain this may seem cheap, but you need to compare it to local wages.

@BlindTasters Don't see it much over here. Had a not-inexpensive Louis Latour at Majestic and while technically accomplished, it didn't make my heart beat any faster: @tomsk71/the-majestic-november-tasting-b6aff3ca488e" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">medium.com/@tomsk71/the-m…

The soils of Pouilly-Vinzelles are richer in iron than those of Pouilly-Fuissé, as you can see from this pic that I once took. Le Clos de Grand-Père sits on a vein of limestone right in the village of Vinzelles (Gallo-Roman, Vincella, 'Little Vineyard'). In a good spot at 8 yo

@ADHalliwell Saw this first-hand working at a trade body - we used to survey members on salaries and fee income. Salaries were lower outside London (so lower cost for business), but fee-per-head plummeted. So regional businesses were much poorer despite a lower cost base vs the capital.

@ADHalliwell Problem for locals is that while wages fall, other costs don't - supermarket goods, fuel etc are no cheaper, so you are poorer in Manchester than in London, even though Manchester is cheaper. London, of course, is brutal to commute into, so you take the money with the pain.

@ADHalliwell @Deborahj_Powell Good point Andrew - there's low prices and there's sustainably low prices. Same for high prices. Good branding is how you maintain a price premium (once the product quality is sorted). Aim is to be high-side acceptable per Van Westendorp scale.

@Deborahj_Powell I honestly think #Logroño is the best value wine destination in the world. I can't really think of anywhere else that combines such a good range of #wine at such low prices, so I do feel lucky. I suppose the flip side of this is that loads of producers are struggling...

@ADHalliwell Pratfall / Streisand Effect - Pratfall: deliberate error with the specific intention of provoking a reaction - Streisand Effect: an attempt to hide something that backfires and draws even more attention to it You're just making want to go there and try these wines now 😉

What whites do you have by the glass? "We've got Rueda, Godello, Albariño". Perhaps I need to stop posting about this kind of stuff, it just annoys me, that's all. It's because I care about #SpanishWine and hate to see hospitality consistently make so many errors on home turf.
ADHalliwell@ADHalliwell

Bad error for a serious #winebar. Great to see Lalama but should be Ribeira Sacra, not Bierzo. Also I believe Mencía is only a bit part player. There are sevrl other errors on the list. These kind of slips may seem picky, but reduce my confidence in the bar. #TascaEulalia #Dénia

@JeffPGwine Have always preferred Pinot in its Blanc and Gris versions TBH. Did a Franco-German road trip last summer: Rhine -> Baden -> Alsace and picked up various bottles along the way. Brief excursion from Italy to Alsace for some Pinot Blanc. A hint of citrus on the aroma with mineral, pear and peach flavor and a soft mouthfeel with a medium body. Nothing ornate here. Simple, clean, and delicious

@NickAnt12345 Maybe someone who just likes to follow and read? Had one of those - turned out to be a former colleague in PR under a pseudonym. Suspect she just needed to know what was going on for professional purposes.

@jamiegoode @ADHalliwell It’s more politics - at the lower end, at least. UK chooses to put high duties on alcohol, so a €5 wine there is £12 here.

A tale of two #winelists in #Alicante. One (probably) has better #wines, which is fair enough, you pick your budget and your customers. But the list at Vinomas is almost totally useless if you want to choose something to drink, whereas the one at Albarrote is perfect.

Rkatsiteli from a small pioneer in the Akasheni microzone of Kakheti #Georgia. Macerated 6 months in qvevri (buried earthenware). It's how wine used to to made 000s of years ago. Super fresh but more textured & gripping with an aromatic spectrum including apricots, tea & cumin.

@ADHalliwell @jamiegoode All wine in Europe is better and cheaper than what you can buy in UK. This is why we holiday there pretty much every year; a fortnight of food, wine, history, rivers, hills etc and we are ready to head back to Brexitlandia for another 50 weeks with a bootful of local stuff.

@jamiegoode This is what I thought! And weirdly it's in downtown plumb central #Alicante, with a sea view. London-based #wine lovers should consider a trip over.

@AdrianJMcManus @ADHalliwell So much to unpack in your question Adrian. Is the underlying wine good? Is the list just badly presented? Does good list presentation = better wines? I've never run a bar in Spain, so no idea what I would do here.

@ADHalliwell @CambWineBlogger The biggest howler is the Ribera del Duero where for an extra €0.30 you get Tinto Fino as opposed to Tempranillo. If there were enough Merenzao out there to sell by the glass, I’d definitely sell Bastardo for 30 cents more, wouldn’t you?

@ADHalliwell Fair points Andrew - I typically ask the somm (if there is one) what they like or failing that, what's popular. A wine list where I knew all the wines is somewhere I'd probably avoid; I like the serendipity of trying something new and seeing what's interesting.

@CambWineBlogger It's not the wines per se, it's that there's no way of knowing what the wines are in the last pic. So you could get into one of those difficult conversations with bar staff who may or may not know and are busy anyhow. Much better to state what there is and let the consumer choose
