Super Mario Galaxy Movie Composer Brian Tyler says there is a lot of trust between Koji Kondo and him. He would also talk to other game composers at Nintendo:
"I know Koji Kondo from working on the last film, and then there are other people I’ve worked with, like the composer for the Super Mario Galaxy games. I got to know them and the whole gang at Nintendo, including the head of Nintendo. I spent time with them up at Skywalker.
In fact, Koji Kondo got inducted into The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame at the 27th Dice Awards in Las Vegas. When they asked him, “Who do you want to tell the story of your life and career up on stage?” He was like, “Brian Tyler.” So, I went out there and introduced his award.
There’s a lot of trust there. After the last one, Koji was like, “You know all these things, see what you come up with,” for this one. I’ll send this massive list to them of what I want to do, and pretty much they just say, “Wow. That’s, that’s wild. Just do your thing.” But if they see something, they’ll say, “Hey, did you know there’s a character there? Why don’t we make a reference there, or not?”
They know to never do a reference if it’s going to steal away from the experience of the film. So, they’re like, “We came to you because you score films, and that is what you do. You know how to write music that tells the story, and adds to the emotional experience and narrative of a film. We don’t want anything to get in the way of that. That’s the main goal.” Which is the right thing. It’s the way to go. Put the movie and the experience first. After that, you can get fancy. The whole thing’s really fun regardless.
I really have to credit them for putting the story first. They trust me with a very big task that is important for the film. So I just go for it. It’s a massive undertaking, but it’s a blast, you know.
Nintendo has brought me a lot of joy, and now I get to join up with them. I remember playing the games with my girlfriend and my friends on Nintendo. Like Mario Kart and stuff. Those are memories from my life."

Happy Easter!
I've observed the book of Nehemiah today, and was struck in particular by the following verse:
Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law. -Nehemiah 8:9
In the past, my observances of Easter have been solemn, to the point of being dour and droll. As a child it was a fancy outfit, long church service, then dwindling the rest of the day away, relieved that the "holiday" was over. Later, it would be discouragement and frustration in feeling burdened and convicted by the observance as I didn't live up to its standard, even as traditions faded and society changed, freeing me from various surface level expectations. It was a relief, but I didn't feel any better about the day.
Today I attempt to understand my own life how, later in Nehemiah, the people were able to rejoice in a similar way:
Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy, because they now understood the words that had been made known to them. - Nehemiah 8:12
As we are told, it's good news that Jesus lives! It's natural to respond to Christian teaching with annoyance, indifference, discouragment and frustration, until we understand the message. Instead of dragging ourselves through burdensome, flavorless rituals, or piling doom and despair upon ourselves for our mistakes as if we could do anything about it, we should rejoice and live!
As Psalm 34:8 suggests: Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.
Even if you don't believe, know that this is the actual Christian message, in spite of all the misrepresentations (including my own) of it. My faith is not one of condemnation, but of hope. You don't have to believe, but you don't have to despise it either.
