How were the world’s most beautiful cities planned? Let’s learn from them to address urban sprawl and tackle a primary root cause of climate change. Classic Planning is how we built cities before planning, zoning, and traffic started challenging them. eventbrite.com.au/cc/street-leve…

there’s a ton to learn about every period of architecture. my personal fav (what? contemporary architects like renaissance architecture?) is the Jameh Mosque of Isfahan. the adherence to mathematical proportions both in the plan and elevation is beyond astounding

Imagine if American oligarchs financed architects who built churches like this one. Instead, trillions of dollars are wasted on trash that history will forget about.

@MatiasVolco That would be a very interesting exercise and a great initiative — to render with modern CGI what these places would look like at the street level. All is not lost and there is still the opportunity to return to better ideas.

How do you solve urban sprawl? Some say transit, some say the proximity of services and jobs, some housing availability. While all are important, the foundational aspect of good urban design is actually town and country delineation. Without this, no other approach is complete. 🧵

@MatiasVolco Thank you for sharing — what a great example of the recognition of genius loci. We also love the great unrealised Ernest Gimson plan for Canberra. What could have been!

@ClassicPlanInst I adore Eliel Saarinen's entry for Canberra where it is monumental government buildings that provide the limit between the City center, reminiscent of Mitte, and a large park. In this case the natural boundary is the valley itself, but it is too large, so Saarinen solved it.

Unfortunately, garden cities did not live up to their promise and, ironically, partly led to the creation of the modern-day suburb — and (sub)urban mistakes like Canberra. To save our cities, we need classic planning — which is how the world's best cities were built.

The concept of town and country was identified by Ebenezer Howard, who devised Garden Cities. Garden Cities were supposed to be self-sufficient entities that provided a refuge from the noxious effects of industrialisation.
