"Climate change and the rate of change in particular is probably holding some surprises in terms of the impacts that it has across Australia." - Dr Karl Braganza The State of the Climate report 2024, released by @CSIRO and @BOM_au this week, serves as Australia’s biannual report card on climate. It reveals that the country has already warmed by 1.51 degrees since 1910, with ocean #temperature rises surprising even #scientists. We are already living in a new #climate, facing a future that will be hotter, more extreme, and unpredictable. Read more | bom.gov.au/state-of-the-c… Urgent action to cut ties with fossil fuels is critical. We urge the Australian government to take immediate and essential steps to safeguard our #planet and to meet their fair share of the global climate effort. #ClimateReport #Australia #ClimateActionNow #ClimateChange #ParisAgreement #LeadOnClimate

Today, the @ClimateRealityA community officially launched a Community of Practice (CoP). We were grateful to see so many inspiring and dedicated Climate Reality Leaders come together from across the network, including Kiribati, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Aotearoa, and Australia, to map out the future of this community and discuss how it can support our shared goals. At our first session, we: 🌏Explored strategies for civil society engagement in advocacy leading up to the potential Pacific COP in 2026 🤝Laid the groundwork for a connected community of diverse climate voices 💡Discussed the purpose of this Community of Practice and its potential impact 🗣Shared key insights from our recent Civic Dinner 🍃 Introduced the role of Kitchen Table Conversations in advancing grassroots climate action Thank you to everyone who joined and shared their insights! We’re looking forward to shaping this community together and to our next workshop on Kitchen Table Conversations happening on 12 November, 12-1pm AEDT. New evidence shows that Australia’s gas exports may be even worse for the climate than coal. A peer-reviewed study published in the journal Energy Science and Engineering earlier this month found that total climate pollution from liquified natural gas (LNG) is estimated to be 33% greater than that from coal over a 20-year period. This directly challenges industry narratives and underscores the urgent need to address the true climate impact of Australia’s fossil fuel exports. Read more | shorturl.at/ePZAf Key takeaways from the study: 🌏 LNG is not the climate solution it's claimed to be, with emissions potentially exceeding those of coal across its full lifecycle. 🌏 Methane leaks, often overlooked, have 80 times the atmospheric heat-trapping power of carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. 🌏 The issue isn’t whether gas is slightly better or worse than coal; both are detrimental to the climate, and we must strive to reduce our reliance on them as swiftly as possible. It’s time for governments to take decisive action, raise their climate ambitions, and commit to the transformative policies required to meet their fair share of the global climate effort. #LeadOnClimate #BeAmbitious #NetZeroNow #JustTransitionNow

Earlier this month, ministers and global leaders gathered at the #G20 to discuss fair and affordable clean energy transitions. The resulting G20 Energy Transition Ministerial Statement and Principles for Just and Inclusive Transition highlight commitments from the world's largest energy consumers and producers to accelerate clean, affordable, and inclusive transitions. These documents align with #SDG7, the Paris Agreement, and the outcomes of the First Global Stocktake adopted at COP28.Here are some key takeaways: 🌿Accelerating clean energy: Commitment to inclusive energy transitions that prioritise the needs of vulnerable populations. 🌿Investment mobilisation: Urgent call to scale up financing for energy transition technologies, especially in developing countries. 🌿Global Coalition for Energy Planning: Establishment of the Global Coalition for Energy Planning (GCEP) to enhance collaboration. 🌿Universal access to clean cooking: Commitment to achieve universal access to clean cooking by 2030 with financial support for developing nations. 🌿Sustainable supply chains: Emphasis on the need for transparency and sustainability in supply chains for critical minerals and technologies. 🌿Addressing inequalities: Recognition of the challenges faced by developing countries in energy transitions while ensuring energy security and universal access to affordable and sustainable energy. Access the full statement and principles | g20.org/en/tracks/sher… This is a step in the right direction, but we now need to see our governments act on this, raise ambition, and commit boldly towards a just and fair transition for all. #JustTransitionNow #BeAmbitious #LeadOnClimate #EnergyTransition #SustainableDevelopment #G20 #CleanEnergy #ClimateAction

“Fossil fuels are killing us, all of us. It is therefore immoral and unacceptable to any country to open new fossil fuel projects, as Australia has recently done with the three coalmine expansion projects it has just approved,” – Dr. Maina Talia Read more | shorturl.at/YPhyD Dr. Talia’s powerful words reflect the deep concerns of Pacific nations in response to Australia’s recent approval of three coal mine expansions. Pacific leaders have described this decision as a 'direct threat to our collective future,' casting a shadow over Australia's credibility as it lobbies to co-host #COP31 alongside Pacific Island nations. The approval of these new coal projects raises serious questions about Australia’s commitment to urgent climate action and its leadership in addressing the climate crisis. 💡 Key takeaways: 🌏 Australia’s climate leadership is undermined: Approving new coal mine expansions contradicts Australia’s aspirations to co-host COP31 and weakens its leadership on climate change. 🌴 Pacific leaders call for decisive action: Leaders such as Dr. Talia and Kiribati’s Anote Tong are urging Australia to back its climate commitments with action by rejecting new fossil fuel projects. ⚡ A global push for fossil fuel phase-out: Tuvalu and other Pacific nations continue to lead calls for a fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty, advocating for a transition to renewable energy as essential for their survival. Australia’s actions must align with its climate ambitions if it is to be seen as a credible partner for #COP31 and climate leadership requires an end to new coal and fossil fuel expansion. #LeadOnClimate #BeAmbitious #ClimateAction #PacificLeadership #NoNewCoal #COP31 #RenewableEnergy

With COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan around the corner we thought it's a great time to re-share our international climate cooperation goals for 2024. As global momentum builds, our focus remains on a swift, systemic, and just transition toward true net zero emissions, with major steps toward that goal by the end of the decade. The next few months will be critical for aligning global and targeted local efforts toward a healthy and equitable future for all. Here’s what @ClimateReality's 11 global branches are focusing on to collaboratively work towards a just transition: Goal 1: Quit polluting the planet. Accelerate action this decade to phase out fossil fuels and rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Goal 2: Finance a just transition. Secure global finance commitments at the scale needed to support a 1.5ºC pathway. Goal 3: Adopt ambitious climate plans. Develop new climate action commitments that keep the 1.5ºC target within reach. Goal 4: Make COP fit for purpose. Ensure the conference is effective and actionable in driving forward global climate goals. Our work would not be possible without a network of dedicated, passionate Climate Reality Leaders—over 2,400 in the Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific region, and over 50,000 worldwide. #BeAmbitious #LeadOnClimate #JustTransitionNow #ClimateChange

Very disappointing news this week, with the federal government giving the green light to three coal mines in NSW, allowing them to extend their operations for another three to four decades. This will result in 1.4 billion tonnes of emissions, and the Narrabri coal project alone is set to destroy 491 hectares of endangered koala habitat. Read more | abc.net.au/news/2024-09-2… There are a further 36 coal projects currently awaiting decision under Australia’s environment laws on Minister Tanya Plibersek’s desk, as well as numerous gas projects. Scientists say new coal and gas must be stopped to protect Australians from the effects of climate change. Pacific leaders are demanding Australia stop approving new coal and gas to give their islands a fighting chance. We stand in solidarity and call on the government to show courageous climate action by prioritising the interests of our environment and future generations above those of fossil fuels. Every voice counts. Add your name to this @TheAusInstitute petition | nb.australiainstitute.org.au/stop_new_fossi… #JustTransitionNow #ClimateAction #BeAmbitious #NoToCoal
