Being talented doesn’t make you a great player.
According to Curt Cignetti, the real separator is how a player responds to coaching.
That reveals three types of players:
1️⃣ Inconsistent players
They take coaching on their own terms:
• Accept praise
• Resist correction
2️⃣ Good players
They take coaching when it’s given:
• Listen to feedback
• Apply it in practice
3️⃣ Great players
They seek coaching relentlessly:
• Self-scout constantly
• Ask for more correction
Talent sets the floor.
Your relationship with coaching determines the ceiling.

Defensive coordinator Gary Patterson explains why he’s adapted the white stripe on the defenders helmets during practice. “It’s an eyes thing” when reviewing the practice film they’re able to see the players snap their eyes by seeing the stripe move.
When they get to the point where they’re snapping their eyes giving signals and doing the right things— the stripe will come off.

Why does Indiana have short practices?
It’s not about doing less.
It’s about wasting nothing.
Cignetti learned early:
Less exposure = fewer injuries.
Fewer injuries = more continuity.
But the practices aren’t just shorter.
They’re sharper.
Over half the time is scheme communication and job assignment reps.
They’re rehearsing decisions.
Practice days are mental
so game days can be physical.

Why do coaches care about GPA?
Because there’s no such thing as a “dumb football player” anymore — especially in the transfer portal era.
When I transferred from Oregon State University to Fresno State, I learned this fast.
Same game.
Different language.
At Fresno State under Kalen DeBoer we called a coverage “4 Special.”
At Oregon State? “4 Packer.”
Strong Safety at Fresno = “SS.”
On my board I’d tag it “R” (Rover).
Post / Corner concept at OSU = “Peel.”
At Fresno = “Scissors.”
10-yard out + MOS fade at OSU = “Sonic.”
At Fresno = “Seattle.”
Outside Zone run at OSU = “Dagger.”
At Fresno = “Detroit.”
Different words.
Same concepts.
If you can’t process information quickly...
If you can’t translate terminology…
If you can’t learn a new system in weeks instead of months…
You won’t survive the portal.
GPA isn’t about being a “school guy.”
It’s proof you can learn, adapt, and execute.
And in today’s game — that’s non-negotiable.
Smart is the new strong.

Detroit Lions HC Dan Campbell - Meeting Structure
"First of all I know this, you can give them deadhead if you're not careful, so hit them in spurts. You give them 20 minutes, hit them on what you need to hit them on & get them out for a couple minutes, bring them back & keep going."
"It needs to be interactive, ultimately we're teachers. We're teachers in football, so how do you communicate & articulate what you're trying to get across to those players. Don't make it more complex than it needs to be, keep it simple where they can play fast, know what to do & make it interactive, make it fun.
