Americans are losing their minds. "A country that can't maintain its own security leads the Security Council?!" Welcome to how the UN's worked since 1946. You're just noticing now. Here's what "president of the Security Council" actually means: ceremonial rotating chair. 1 month. Sets meeting agendas. Chairs discussions. Zero actual power. Then rotates to the next country. Every member gets a turn. That's the rule. Somalia's a non-permanent member (elected for 2-year term), so they get their month like everyone else. This isn't Somalia being elevated - it's Somalia getting the job everyone gets. But the optics are chef's kiss absurd. Somalia can't control its own capital without foreign peacekeepers. Al-Shabaab (al-Qaeda affiliate) controls huge portions of the country. Piracy's still a problem off their coast. The government barely functions outside Mogadishu with international support. And for 1 month, they'll chair discussions about global security threats. That's not Somalia's fault. That's the UN being the UN - an organization where appearance matters more than function, where every nation gets ceremonial equality regardless of actual capability. The UN Security Council has 5 permanent members with veto power (U.S., Russia, China, UK, France) and 10 rotating members elected for 2-year terms. The monthly presidency rotates among all 15. It's designed for symbolic equality, not effectiveness. Somalia chairing security discussions is comedy. But it's comedy that's been part of the script since the beginning. The only thing that changed is Americans noticing. You know what would be more embarrassing than Somalia leading for a month? Staying in the UN while pretending it matters, then getting mad when the rotating ceremonial position rotates to a dysfunctional state. Either leave because the institution's broken, or stay and stop acting shocked when broken institutions do broken things. But don't pretend this is new. The UN's been this way your entire life. @mgmplus YOU Completely BLEW IT with Robin Hood. The first 2 Episodes were Dirty&Gritty, like watching something at 10pm on HBO. Ep 3 is worse than watching Xena: Warrior Princess on basic cable in the 1990's. U went from Sopranos 2 A Jack Black Movie. Even the MUSIC is Cheesy.
