Are we serving the community? Or building personal brands? The griot tradition reminds us: the best storytelling does both. It honours the individual voice while serving the collective memory.

And it teaches us something: when you can't rely on external systems, you build internal ones. When institutions don't preserve your history, you become the archive.

They developed techniques, rhythmic patterns, melodic structures, repetition that made massive amounts of information memorable and retrievable. This wasn't just impressive. It was necessary.

Before the Internet, There Was the Griot: The Origins of Black Storytelling Before algorithms. Before platforms. Before "content creation" became a career. There was the griot. And understanding the griot helps us understand something crucial about Black storytelling today.

The role of memory as archive In the digital age, we externalise memory. We screenshot. We bookmark. We save to the cloud. But griots had to hold entire libraries in their minds.

Griots told stories that: Reinforced communal values Preserved histories that couldn't be written Settled disputes through precedent Celebrated achievements Warned against repeated mistakes This is leadership through narrative.

The role was often hereditary. They studied for years under master griots, learning not just how to perform, but how to carry responsibility. Because storytelling, in this tradition, wasn't about self-expression. It was about serving the community.

Communities would have forgotten their origins. Cultural practices would have disappeared. Sound familiar? Storytelling as leadership Here's what's often misunderstood: Griots weren't just talented individuals who happened to tell stories well. They were trained from childhood.
