Robert Downey Jr. revealed that Burger King unexpectedly helped save his life after a “disgusting burger” made him throw his meal along with the drugs in 2003, which helped him to become sober.
“It was such a disgusting burger I ordered… I thought something really bad was going to happen.”
He recalled that this specific "moment of clarity" prompted him to pull over and toss all of his drugs into the ocean.
He stated, "I have to thank Burger King," adding, "At that moment of clarity, I tossed all of the drugs in my car into the ocean and got cleaned up". This incident is considered his "rock bottom".
Downey said he was driving around with a car full of drugs when the meal suddenly made him rethink everything. He pulled over, threw the drugs into the ocean, and decided to finally clean up his life.
That experience later inspired one of the most famous scenes in Iron Man (2008), where Tony Stark returns from captivity and immediately asks for an American cheeseburger from Burger King before addressing the press.
What looked like simple product placement was actually a deeply personal tribute from Downey to the moment he says changed his life forever.
