Gisteren werd alsnog stilgestaan bij de 78e Onafhankelijkheidsdag van Israël. Het was een eer om de Israëlische ambassadeur te ontmoeten. In zijn bijdrage benadrukte hij de sterke relatie tussen Nederland en Israël en de band tussen christelijke gemeenschappen en het Joodse volk.

It is deeply troubling to see elements of a hateful BDS agenda increasingly finding their way into municipal policy discussions in Amsterdam. It seems a municipality is trying to overstep the national government in order to single out Israeli companies. This is inappropriate, divisive, and further fuels a hostile climate for Jewish and Israeli communities in the city. Amsterdam has a historic responsibility to remain inclusive to all citizens, and not fall into a hateful cesspit of exclusion and boycott. Attempts to isolate Israel will not bring peace any closer.

I had a open and cordial meeting with @DefensieMin Dilan Yeşilgöz. We spoke about the current situation in the ME and the destabilising threat of the Iranian regime. I raised concerns about growing Antisemitism in the Netherlands and the festering antisemetic and anti-israeli activism in campuses. I appreciate the support and longstanding friendship of @DilanYesilgoz to Israel.

Daniel-Ryan Spaulding and Jewish community members visited Arnhem to protest Ye’s concert. What they encountered was disturbing: concertgoers laughing at Nazi rhetoric and mocking the Holocaust. It is alarming that in the Netherlands of 2026, antisemitism is openly accepted.

Israel, in response, strikes a Hezbollah target in Beirut. ​Iran - yes, Iran again - launches ballistic missiles at Israel. Yes, launching ballistic missiles in response to Israel's action against Hezbollah in Lebanon. ​These are the facts, and that’s without even mentioning the Houthis in Yemen, who also attacked Israel on Iran's behalf tonight. ​These are the facts. Yes, I know there are already those who simply don't care about them. We do, it’s our lives that are being threatened.

Kanye West is going to perform in the Netherlands tomorrow. In a country facing growing antisemitism, there was no way to stop this outspoken antisemite, whose statements would fit into any Nazi publication. ​The Jewish community, with our moral support, is expressing its anger and frustration through an exceptional installation in Amsterdam, countering the statements of prominent Dutch figures against antisemitism with the vile rhetoric of West. The spectators were offered a possibility to sit and write a complaint to their elected officials regarding this repugnant concert.

I’ve covered every Eurovision contest for the past decade, so let me be direct, beyond the explosive headline, this “inside story” has very little in it. Israel is hardly the only participating country that treats Eurovision as a PR opportunity. The piece itself admits no rules were broken and the integrity of the vote wasn’t compromised. Eurovision’s voting system is built on voting for a country, not against one. Israel may be actively promoting itself, but per the NYT’s own reporting, the audience is voting for Israel of its own free will. I can hardly see the scandal. That’s how the contest works.
