SHADOW-BANNING POSTS ON X. My post on the "Interesting Ghanaian Tradition" of seeing off the Head of State and welcoming him with Fanfare when he returns from his travels has been deleted from my timeline. That it would be deleted from my timeline came as no surprise to me because prior to its deletion, I had received frantic calls from Ghana querying me on why I would post something like this on X. Apparently the post was viewed as an implied criticism of the current government. Try as hard as I could to explain the context for the post (and the fact that the comments made me concede that the "tradition" dates from way back, including under President Mills), the powers that be decided to request X to delete the Post. This is fair enough. X will delete and/or suppress posts (or even accounts) at the request of "authorized entities" in a given country. But why lie about it? Why in place a notification that reads: "This Post was deleted by the Post author. Learn more" I definitely did not delete the post because I thought it was thought-provoking and it generated a useful discussion and debate. It forced me to eat humble pie and to concede that the airport reception organized (in the spirit of of this tradition) for President Mills to show-case his "excellent health" after his return from the U.S. was "INSANE"! The post may have been deleted from my timeline but it is not "lost". Luckily, someone thought it interesting enough to repost it.
