18-year-old Jack Armstrong has been charged over violent riots in Belfast. He is accused of rioting and attempting criminal damage to a police Land Rover. Police footage shows him grabbing the vehicle’s wing mirror. He was not wearing a mask. After his photo was released, he was identified by a member of the public and a police officer. Jack grew up in care. After turning 18, he tried living with a relative, but it did not work out, and he has been sofa surfing since then. He was remanded in custody until the 24th of June.

That doesn’t mean we are doomed - we aren’t. But we need to elevate this issue to treat it as the national emergency it has become. The British public don’t want a country focussed on our divides. But unless we act decisively, that is it what we will get.

Governments have been complacent, negligent and often grossly incompetent. They haven’t taken social cohesion seriously & as a result extremists, hostile states and algorithmic social media have driven us to the edge.

10 years ago my wife, the mum of our kids & the MP for Batley&Spen was killed by a far right extremist. At anniversaries I try to be optimistic about the future. But not this time. In the ten years since she was killed we have gone backwards & I fear our democracy is now at risk
